I guess it would make sense if the Observers were something akin to the Shapeshifters, but instead of cyborgs from the alternate dimension they're cyborgs from the future. Maybe it was Peter who created the Observers in the future and the doomsday machine, and sent them both back in time to aid present Peter. That would explain why the Observer saved the last copy of Peter from drowning under the ice (to avoid a paradox), and why the machine only responds to Peter's DNA.

There has been a serious lack of Observers this season.

not saying it'll definitely happen, but JJ Abrams in the past (Alias), have used things for plot devices and then discards them. I totally wouldn't be surprised if they never come back or only for the last few episodes.

That would be very disappointing, the Observers are easily the most intriguing aspect of the show for me.

Wasn't that explained when Walter was gathering the kids from the trial to help them all crossover? And when they needed Bell to go back? I'd have to rewatch the episodes but iirc a single person can't crossover the whole way.

The crossing over thing is a little vague right now, but Olivia was obviously there in the flesh.

She actually did cross over. When she called Ella and found out that she was alive, and it was her birthday today, she realized that her Peter hallucinations were telling the truth, and when Walternate asked her what she saw, Olivia just lied and said she saw blackness, that it didn't work. No consciousness crossed over or anything -- the explanation is just that Olivia lied about blacking out.

This. That's also why the little kid saw her earlier in the episode, she actually did cross. Awesome episode, really glad the show is back on.

I think people are confused about the assistant and Walternate pulling Olivia out of the tank -- if you noticed, the camera in the tank got borked and just showed static, both times Liv crossed over. They just pulled her out of the tank when she crossed back over to their side.

The source of the confusion, for me at least, is the big discrepancy between how long it took them to get her out of the tank the first time and how long it took the second.
