If you can, swim and play tennis alot. 10000000000x better than running and most other aerobics you'd probably try doing, more fun, and affects a lot more area's of your body.

A few years ago me and one of my friends just randomly decided to play tennis everyday after class. We went to the gym everyday as well, and had been going for a while... but throwing tennis in there without even realizing it really really tightened us up and made a huge difference.

A pound of fat is 3,500 calories that need to be burned. Let's assume for the sake of argument that in 2 months there are 60 days. 500 calories less a day, times 60 days, is a deficit of 30,000 calories. 30,000/3,500 is approximately 8.57 pounds of weight you'll lose just from restricting your diet. To lose 20 lbs, that would take 140 days, or between 4 and 5 months.

Glad to hear you won't be taking any of the pills considering the possible side effects. You can tighten up a bit, but there's no shortcuts to getting in better shape, it takes work, you have to put in the time to see the effects. That's why most people that try to get in really good shape fail, because it takes a long time to see results.

A smarter idea would be to ask someone, hopefully a friend, not a random stranger, about their diet/workout routines if they have a build you admire. If they say "bulimia works for me, yayayya" try a different friend.

my friends and I play racquetball alot. It's not the same as tennis obviously but I feel like I'm getting a pretty good workout when I play it nevertheless. I don't really like swimming that much though. What are the intervals of working out when you just start on the treadmill? I read it in another thread a long time ago, but there are so many workout threads (lots started by me, sigh) and I forgot what it was.

Something like 1 minute run, 1 minute walk, 1 minute run, 1 minute walk, etc. etc. but it wasn't 1 minute to 1 minute ratio, it was something different, and supposedly that is the best thing to do on the treadmill/elliptical machine.

i'd suggest picking up volleyball as well. doing it in small teams will have you constantly running, jumping, and diving for the ball.
(also, after doing it for so long, and going against so many spikes, you WILL lose your ability to flench, and people will think your a badass.)

drinking a fuckton of water is also really good. i drink so much water i feel dehydrated if my piss is slightly yellow.

i dont eat breakfast, but i do drink a bottle of water when i wake up, its better than nothing.
cause of school, im generally eating dinner at 4:30-5:30-ish, and i get hungry at about 9. i have a some fruit >:3
working out mon/wed/friday, marching every day with band(super-tan, go!), and walking around campus alot is doing alot for shaping my body.

Honestly the treadmill sucks... alot of them will cause damage to joints and bones. Running is great, but you need the right shoes, the right form, and the right place to do it at. In most cases it's more of a warmup anyway. Treadmills don't even burn that many calories. You have to be on it for a long time to get much out of it, where as previously mentioned things like tennis, swimming, volleyball, and hell even basketball, are going to do much more in a shorter amount of time with more of you wanting to actually do it. I.E, forcing yourself to get on a treadmill is alot harder then just playing some sport with friends, or going for a run around campus/town... you'll have more motivation to keep going, and less distractions. Weight training is going to do you real good if you can get into that also. Free weights > all.

Depending on a person's schedule, it may not be easy to find a steady partner(s) for certain sports activities, which is why aerobic machines are appealing.

I'm more into weightlifting, but during the times where I am focusing on aerobics, my activity of choice is Tae Kwon Do. It's so fun to the point where you don't even realize you're exercising and burning a ton of calories. If you go to an actual class, you're guaranteed to get a ton of exercise and burn more calories. If for some reason you can't make it to class, you can just do a normal Tae Kwon Do workout in the gym, which is still fun and burns a ton of calories.

Avoid diet pills, as people mentioned. Many will "trick" your body into an artificial higher metabolism, but once the pill is out of your system your metabolism rate will plunge to levels lower than before(particularly after long/sustained periods of use).

Really the best thing is exercise, monitoring what you eat, and a healthy body image. I can't stress how many people I know (mostly women, but men too) have an unhealthy body image and unrealistic expectations.

Where do people look for Volleyball, Tennis, Basketball, Racquetball, etc. if they're really out of shape?

Personally, I'm quite out of shape. I'm in the process of burning off all the weight I gained when I quit smoking. I went from about 150~160 to almost 200 pounds over about a year and a half (a bigger gain than normal, but w/e it's better than smoking). I've lost about half (20 lbs) of that now, but I'm still overweight and very 'out of shape.' The way I am now, I'd be out of breath so fast playing VB, BB, etc.

I guess I'm asking whats the best way (or a steady one) to build stamina for sports like that, because I don't want to sabotage the team just by being on it. Plain old running is something that I could never get into. Should I just give in and buy a gym membership for the machines or what?

In my personal opinion, jump roping is the absolute best way to build stamina. Before I started Tae Kwon Do, I was in boxing, and sometimes my boxing coach would make me spend an entire training session doing nothing but jump roping. We'd always go 2:30 minutes of normal jump roping -> 30 seconds of fast jump roping -> 1min rest, and repeat over and over until I'm like half dead.

When I started Tae Kwon Do, I kept on jump roping even though the instructor didn't require it.

Jump roping (<- is that even the right word or is it "jumping rope?) can be pretty rough though, so it may be hard for you at first. Jogging is always a good idea though.

It's been a long time since I've jumped rope (can't say I know the correct usage either). A rope can't cost more than a few dollars at the store and I can use it almost anywhere. I'll give it a shot.

A couple of things- human metabolism is pretty much locked in. It doesn't change. People don't really understand what the word means and what it refers to in terms of your physiology. No pill is really going to change your metabolism in a way that matters. At best a highly trained athlete (ie a Lance Armstrong or something) has a .2% or so difference from couch potato joe. So don't look at stuff that says that it changes your metabolism. Burn calories by exorcising and by building and toning muscle.

Calendars etc are ways of tracking your intake not ways of tracking your metabolism change- because it won't change appreciably. The goal is- especially for people who overeat which is the vast majority of the population- to drive home how much you're eating over the course of the day and the actual calorie intake vs output. It helps to make you aware of what you eat. It helps make you think when you are eating something "wait, I've already had x and y and z today, do I really need this?" Most folks for their average dinner have about twice as many calories than they should.

As for pills- here's the deal with rapid weight loss and "dieting." When you lose weight rapidly, especially when you do it with diet pills or any kind of starvation diet thing, your body goes into crisis mode. Your body has established the weight you are now as a baseline and it doesn't care that your baseline is higher than it should be. When you suddenly start eating less and losing weight your body thinks it's being starved. It goes into panic mode and it will do everything it can to go back to baseline- this is why 90% of people who diet end up at or higher than their original weight. The cravings become almost impossible to overcome. The way to do it permanently is to slowly- by proper diet not crash diet and by exercise not starvation- reduce your weight so your body can adjust as you go.

I'm not really sure what you mean, but I'm not trolling, I just have bad self esteem. Also, for the person that is overweight and wondering about building stamina to play games, just play them. When I first started playing racquetball I got SO tired after like the first five minutes, and had to take breaks and shit, but after going for a couple weeks now I can last like two or more games before I need to really take a break before continuing. I imagine it's the same with any sport. Don't be embarrassed or anything to play either, just go out and play and have fun.

I actually went last night, and I really hurt my hand. I'm not sure what I did to it but I wish it would feel better.

I wouldn't think it's trolling. I believe it is overweight depending on age. I know several girls that are up to 5'8 and have never weighed more than 120 and are perfectly healthy.

While I don't find a girl 5'1 and 110 unappealing or overweight personally, I think some would call it that and I can understand why she might be bothered by it. In a lot of cases it's hot, but depending on where the weight sits on the person maybe in their eyes it isn't.

As mentioned by Woozie, jumping rope is amazing. I've been boxing for a long time and it's something that goes hand in hand... such a great exercise and sooo demanding, I don't know why I didn't mention it when it's something I do pretty often. I live on the shore so I run everyday on the beach, it SUCKS and is not for everyone, especially to people who hate running like I do, but between that and boxing at the gym I get a great workout.

Echoing the fact that diet pills are garbage.

I took Hyrdoxycut Hardcore to try and cut up a bit and it was a waste. If I went anywhere past 1/2 the recommended dosage I would feel like I could run through walls for 2 hours, then crash horribly afterwards.

I tried the full dosage one time and it completely fucked me up. I was all light headed and shit for almost 4 hours... never again with this bullshit lol.

Treadmills aren't that bad. I actually run a lot on treadmills, especially when the weather gets in the 90s. The bonus I guess is I can watch TV/watch a movie/DVD whatever. I did my long run yesterday on a treadmill (20 miles) and watched the first disc of the House Season 4 DVD. Treadmills are actually softer on your knees and hips than asphalt/pavement/concrete. Packed trails/the trails that run parallel to old railroad tracks are better, but not easily accessible in many parts of the country.

Running isn't as bad for you as people say it is. If you try to do too much too soon, sure, you're more likely to injure yourself. I recommend running as part of any fitness regimen, but as always, the standard "consult your doctor" disclaimer goes here.

That's the thing I like about the treadmills on campus. I can watch TV or something while I'm running, and it keeps track of time/calories/miles/etc.
