Afraid to logoff

I was just online on FF when i get d/c'd and a message that my playonline id was used to login from another location. I'm panicking now because i don't know what to do, i changed my password but if i got a key logger on my system its not gonna do anything to change it.

I follow all the recommendations on this site about safety and passwords, using only firefox with noscript and everything else. Friends are telling me to reformat pc, is this really the only way I can eliminate a hack in my system? Virus scanners aren't picking up anything at all.

Reformat, as a short answer. It's the easiest way to solve this, you'd have to reinstall FFXI, but meh I prefer a clean system after something like that.

The long (and probably more aggrivating) way to do it is virus and spyware scan everything.

You can make a bootable disc with all this software (and more) to help you remove such things. You have to customize it yourself and do manual updates for each program, but it's well worth it.

I just did this the other day. I was trying to dual-box, and I accidentally clicked my own POL ID without realizing. I nearly had a heart attack.

Regarding forum password security It has come to our attention today (9/9/ 08, that the PHPbb databases were accessed in an unauthorized fashion. We have confirmed that when we were PHPbb2 that the database was definitely compromised. When we split from theorderls.com we upgraded to PHPbb3 which we are not definite on whether it was compromised or not. When we switched to VB, all users were required to change their password, an entirely new database, using VB encryption, was created. After researching various exploits, we have discovered that regardless of forum access, if they knew what they were doing, they could hack it. This is a fault in the PHPbb coding. VB are encrypted in an entirely different method, the difference in coding and considerably more frequent updates leave it less likely to be compromised and significantly more secure. However, we are not invincible, there will always be people out there who can find exploits. The best we can do for you is tell you that your forum password should never be the same as any of your other passwords. We want to reiterate this fact now, in light of the circumstances we have discovered today.

nah ff password is unique ever since all the hackings started to happen... a friend in game said that he plays on ps2 and has had that message come up for him too because of either a router or firewall error on his connection and not because someone trying to login to his account. Anyone here know if that's viable? not that I should trust that even if its possible...

No, once you login from another terminal the POL lobby server will send that error to your client(s).

I've never ever heard anyone have this problem over a "firewall" or "router" problem. Firewalls prevent and allow traffic to and from computers. Routers make the information go to the desired destination.

I play on PS2. I've been disconnected before, tried to log back in and gotten a message that I was already logged in and to try again later. Waited a few minutes and got back on fine. This was quite a long time ago, and none of my shit is missing.

I think the server basically can take a while to realize you've disconnected once in a while.

I have had it happen several times where your computer DC's you and ffxi crashes however ingame the server treats it as a logoff and your character stays online for 30 seconds before it registers as DC so if you are really quick with trying to log back in you will get that message. It was really easy to recreate back when you could Alt-tab yourself out of the game and make it crash or if you lose full screen because of a pop up or something.

I'm fairly sure OP is concerned about 'This POL ID has been logged in from another terminal.' or whatever, it can happen any time you're logged in on POL or FFXI if someone else logs on that account.

even if you are being jacked and your pc is compromised it's a good idea to change the password anyway. the rmt bother to hack the accounts in large batches due to the high volume of data they get so changing pw right away can buy you up to a week before they get around to your account again.

Stay logged in, call SquareEnix to have your password reset, explain the situation to them and they should be willing to help (you can perhaps talk to a GM about it or something too to confirm that you're the same person on the phone with them). After this reformat. That's what I would do anyways.

That's what I would do as well. Make sure you have all the registration numbers, just in case.
