If you were an astronaut currently serving on a space station for the next 6 months, and happened to observe Earth getting destroyed by some catastrophe, what would you do? Just chill for the next 6 months until you run out of supplies? Take as much supplies as possible onto the shuttle and head back to earth to see what's left? Take some supplies and point your shuttle off into space and see what's out there before you run out?

Oh god don't let this turn into another scifi movie. Or a new animated Star Wars movie of which the graphics suck so bad I want to BME.

Hmm, can the space shuttle even get back to earth safely without being able to talk to control in houston?

isn't this actually more than likely? that the chance of there being civilized intelligent life comparable to ours would be rather low. i just can't remember where i heard :[ feel free to throw science at me.

The answer to that is "depends on which scientist you ask".

The chance of there being other intelligent life is fairly high from a probability standpoint. Whether or not it exists at the same time as us, and is accessible is another issue.

There could be only one intelligent species per galaxy(if that) and it's likely we'd still never know about each other, despite that meaning there's billions of species.

That's probably the best answer to that question I've ever seen.

No it's not high, it's actually pretty damn low. I didnt see anything about its luminosity, but something bright enough to be seen 130millions light year away (or more) has to be fucking powerful, and a total waste of energy. It's most likely a natural phenomena that could be explained with current physics...just one we don't encounter often.

No, it's incredibly probable that in the near-infinite universe the fairly finite varieties of matter have re-arranged themselves into life multiple times, and we obviously know it's happened at least once.

Even if the odds are one in a google(or more) there's just that many damn galaxies and planets to make it likely to have happened at least twice...

The ODDS are low, is what you're meaning to say, but the sample size is so fucking huge that doesn't matter.
