That's no moon!
That's no moon!
God damn, fucking amazing.
*claps*
That seriously made my day.
I don't like to think about why we don't see other intelligent life forms. It gets me thinking about periodic galactic extinction events and shit, and that is just really fucking depressing.
In 14 billion years, a civilization should have been able to encompass entire galaxies in dyson sphere type objects, yet everywhere we look we see pristine untouched systems.
So either we're really lucky to be here, at random... or something kills every civilization that has ever come into being before it has a chance to advance very far.
Though, the great attractor does still suggest to me a possibility that it is an intelligently constructed object, grandiose as that may sound, there is just no reason for all of the galaxies within a 150 million light year radius to be falling towards one point.
Or, no matter how good your understanding of physics is, you just can't beat the speed of light, and you're stuck on your planet until you die.So either we're really lucky to be here, at random... or something kills every civilization that has ever come into being before it has a chance to advance very far.
Take a look at the LHC. How big it is to do something insignificant. Human are made of matter, and our control over the universe is limited by this. Technological advancement will get exponentially harder when it come to build a civilization in space, and aliens will have the same problems.
Elaborate on the Great Attractor please, it sounds interesting.
Who was eating chips over the lens again?
=/
"The Great Attractor is larger than any known galaxy. In astrological terminology, there are clusters of galaxies possibly containing hundreds and/or thousands of galaxies, and super clusters containing many additional clusters as well. The Great Attractor is just that; a super cluster, or something even larger. The vast distances of space make the guessing of actual size very cloudy
The gravity of the Great Attractor has been pulling the Milky Way in its direction. The motion of local galaxies indicated there was something massive out there that are pulling the Milky Way, the Andromeda Galaxy, and other nearby galaxies towards it. For a while, nobody could see what it was, because it lies behind the plane of our Galaxy, that means the gas and dust in our Galaxy obscures the light from the Great Attractor, and it is outshone by the stars and other objects in our Galaxy."

The Great Attractor is shown in the bottom right corner. The various colors represent the various Redshifts of the galaxy clusters in relation to us and the GA. Again, proof that the universe is ever expanding or moving towards something. The Milky way is in the middle of the cluster field.
You should check out WMAP imaging if you are further interested in this as well. You will learn a lot of fascinating facts about the Universal expansion and movement(s). We have mapped quite a bit of the Universe if you are interested. You may want to see if you cant find books or see if you can Youtube up Joao Magueijo's Big bang if you like theories on VSL, WMAP imaging and/or expansion.
Just throwing that out there since I don't know what you know, don't know or like and dislike. But I am taking a stab at what may interest you.
Interests me, if nobody else.
My interest in general science and continuation of my physics education has grown substantially in past few weeks due in whole to BG forums @_@
Good. Having questions is the first step. No but seriously if you are trying to grasp the concept as a whole, check out "The Elegant Universe" and "Joao Magueijo's Big Bang", you can find the books but you should be able to Youtube them also. Easy to understand and will pique your interest and curiosity even more.
Woozie knows a couple more you may be interested in also, he mentioned some a few others different from mine a few months ago I believe. Check them out, you will have a whole new understanding on things.
While life may exist elsewhere, remember that the population of the universe is, of course, zero:
It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination.
ok this is the job for me.
I will research this conspiracy and get back to you folks asap.
I can't tell if you're being serious or if I'm being whooshed here, but I'll bite anyways.
It's not known that there's an infinite number of worlds. There is one argument that there should be IF the universe is infinite and matter is evenly distributed throughout. However, if this is the case, then there WOULD be an infinite amount of inhabited worlds.
Whether or not the universe is infinite is HIGHLY debatable, which calls to question the whole "infinite amount of space" part.
Also, your logic that goes along the lines of "if there's an infinite amount of worlds but not all are inhabited, then the amount of inhabited worlds is fine" is very very flawed. A subset of an infinite set can still be finite. Kind of like how we have an infinite amount of integers, but not every integer is even, yet the set of all even numbers is still infinite. By that same logic, just because not every planet is inhabited doesn't mean the amount of inhabited worlds is finite. And as I mentioned earlier, the same theory that leads to an infinite amount of worlds also leads to an infinite amount of inhabited worlds (in fact, every single possible way a world can exist WILL happen an infinite amount of times, meaning there would be an infinite amount of worlds where I'm typing this exact same post right now, and an infinite amount of worlds where I'm supreme dictator of the planet).
(Did I get whooshed?)
Edit: Even if you were right, the average population wouldn't be zero, it would be undefined.
Woozie - that post was definitely a joke, I've read something just like it elsewhere (it's someone's bad attempt at scientific humor). Either way, owned by math!
Ok, i figured it out.
The LHC project is actually designed to open a hole in the Van Allen Belt to let Satan in.
Why were we trying to keep him out?
no srsly, this Champion of Christ figured it out
