    Tomahawk (Ability)
    From FFXIclopedia, the free Final Fantasy XI encyclopedia
    Jump to: navigation, search
    Tomahawk has an identical name. If an internal link incorrectly referred you to this page, please change the link to point directly to Tomahawk.
    Job Ability

    * Expends a throwing tomahawk to inflict a special defense down effect on an enemy.
    * Obtained: Warrior Level 75
    * Recast Time: 0:03:00
    * Duration: 0:00:30

    Notes/Description

    * "Special Defense Down" means that this ability will lower a mob's physical and magical damage resistance, should it have any.
    * Examples of mobs to use this ability on: Slimes, Elementals, Skeletons, Jailer of Temperance, etc.
    * If the mob has no damage resistance, Tomahawk will have no effect on the mob.
    * Tomahawk has no effect on buffs that increase a mob's defense such as Protect or Cocoon.
    * Consumes one Throwing Tomahawk per use.
    * Tomahawk has no effect on Stoneskin.
    * Tomahawk will generate a considerable amount of enmity on the mob it is used on.
    * Each additional merit upgrade extends the defense down duration by 0:00:15.
    * Currently Unknown/Untested if Tomahawk will affect Phalanx in any way.Verification Needed
    - Adjusted the damage resistance of "Absolute Virtue."
    By definition Tomahawk SHOULD work to bring AV's Melee/Magic/Souleater resistance down. I'm hoping to give this a shot sunday if we end up poping JoL. But if anyone has plans to do so before then please give this a shot just to see how it goes.

    it be very cool if it works, and all you would need is maybe 2-3 wars with it merited.
    the only thing i would say is that we know it get nerfed if it worked lol. lets see how it goes GL.

    I do not know if it will help with BW, as i think they made it magic dmg.(as in you need to wait a fair amount of time in order for it to do any real dmg again) but other dds or a zerg drk with apoc might be ok. and maybe it will help with BW who knows. anyone do tests to see if its SE?BW resist rate goes down over time?

    Tomahawk applies to a specific term in the damage calculation, and improves damage by 1/4 of the original reduction. What this means is that if the SE adjustment on AV applies only to the Souleater Damage (if a 50+200=250 hit would do 50+20=70 damage and not 25 damage) then it probably doesn't have an effect, and even if it does it will only increase it from 10% to about 32.5% of original damage, so your 200 dmg hits pre-nerf that became 20 dmg yesterday would improve to about 65 dmg with Tomahawk, if it has any effect at all.

    I don't think tomahawk will help melee. AV's stats, just like sky gods, are crazy high, and the damage reduction is mostly caused by this high def/vit.

    Souleater nerf is probably specific to souleater, and not magic damage in overall, so you won't notice anything either. Tomahawk damage reduction apply specifically to slashing/piercing/blunt/magic damage reduction, not high vit, high int, or damage reduction (d.ring).

    Of course, it's just a guess, but it doesnt seem to be your normal damage reduction.

    Does Tomahawk work on the assault where you beat up on those walls? Excavation Duty, or the Fortifications even in campaign?

    @Kaylia, it is possible that it could help some with melee. You mention sky gods, but actually the trend with HNM in CoP was different from the trend in Sky. A perfect example is with Netherblast damage. If a BLM spell does 600 Kirin, it's because he has super-high INT, but since Netherblast doesn't factor INT into dmg it does full damage. A nuke on AV does 600 damage because the game calculates it as 1200 damage and then applies a 50% cut at the end, which is why Netherblast is also halved. However, it is this halving term that Tomahawk helps, so in that sense Tomahawking AV should help in general, at least with magic, and possibly with melee if he has something similar for it. My post was just that it probably doesn't affect the specific souleater nerf, or that if it does it wouldn't be enough to bring back kraken zerg.

    AV takes magic dmg similiarly to Tiamat. Roughly Halved. I actually get less resists on AV than on Tia but thats besides the point.

    The Souleater nerf seems to be done as it is on Einherjar bosses. SE/BW will start off doing full dmg, then it tapers off and all of sudden you're hitting for 20 instead of 240.

    Tomahawk will not allow any sort of zerg attempt on AV.

    I agree about the magic damage reduction on AV. The problem is that Souleater is now doing way less than expected (even after the 50%). If tomahawk wasnt working before the nerf, the chance of it working now is slim, unless they nerfed every kind of magic damage.

    It's worth trying for blm spell I guess (50->70% is a big jump) unless using ja on AV is bad thing <_<

    For melee damage, I'm mostly getting the impression it has high stats because of its evasion, damage and everything. Monsters with damage reduction are usually weaker in other aspect.

    However, even if it was a melee damage reduction, tomahawk wouldn't work unless they specifically gave it a resistance to all three weapons type (temperance, limbus monsters, or racial strength). I never noticed any difference with tomahawk on HNM.

    [edit]
    I wonder if they gave AV every job traits in the game

    Tomahawk will adjust the weapon resistance for a short period of time. I don't think it will fix this new problem.

    Example: Jailer of Fortitude will have a ridiculous amount of defense/whatever vs melee. Jailer of Temperance will cycle through weapon resistance, tomahawk can partially remove this for a short duration.

    At any rate, it doesn't really harm anymore to try this out anyways.

    On Jailer of Temperance. We use an alliance of BLMs and 2x Warrior with maxed tomahawk. And just nuke it down. goes very quick and normally isnt near as messy with 4-7 melle running all over shuffling weapons. I have also seen Tomahawk + Elegy land on an otherwise Immune mob (ZNM).
