Timing out connecting to my own router...

I've been using the same piece of shit WRT54G V5 Linksys (wireless) router for years, and now I'm having a weird problem with it. I'm connected to the internet with it just fine, up/down speed are normal, but recently when I try to access the settings (192.168.1.1 through browser) to forward ports or whatever, it's really fucking slow, and I can only get to the page maybe 1/10 times without it timing out and getting a page load error, happens in both firefox and IE. I'm using WEP key to connect if that matters, and only 2 computers are connected to it atm, including this one.

Is my router just crapping out, or could something else be going on here?

Sounds like it's crapping out. Does your wireless connection drop abnormally often, or more frequently as of late than it used to?

Ok, step one in dealing with this router(not so proud WRT54G V8 owner). Disable your wireless card and directly connect using ethernet to the router. Download the latest firmware for it, update that. Turn off UPnP as it seems to solve problems with this router for some unknown reason although it shouldn't. Switch to WPA encryption as its safer. After all of that is done, make the SSID (Wireless Broadcast) hidden, and change the name on it that way if there is a leech, they won't see it anymore. After you do all of that, power cycle your modem and router and try connecting to the internet. If you can't, buy a new router, as that one is probably trashed.

    Buy a hammer. Apply hammer.

    I hate this router.

This is also another correct method of applied problem solving for this router.
