    Mic Boost in Vista

So, playing with a friend who (We think) somehow activated Mic Boost in Vista; we'd talk on Vent just fine, and randomly, she said 'something happened' (not sure what ^^ and now she is just ungodly loud, along with all the ambient noise - basically, just like mic boost was turned on. Its not like she was simply turned up, because it went from decent volume to OMG EARS HURT WHEN YOU WHISPER BECAUSE OF AMBIENT NOISE loud. That being said...

I run XP, so don't know how to navigate around Vista to turn it off, and she doesn't either. I've tried most of the things I've found on google; none of them seem to be consistent (i.e. she doesn't have a mic boost option in her sound customization... her registry doesn't have the section it should for turning it on/off, etc)

Perhaps its not even mic boost, I don't know, just, been working on this for a week, and I can't figure it out for the life of me, not even with Google's great help :/ Any suggestions?

Start > Control Panel > Sound > Recording Tab > Select mic > Properties (lower right) > Levels tab > adjust accordingly.

Also you can get to those menus from your Vent setup thingy where you adjust the volume controls. The bottom right I think has 2 buttons one for recording and one for playback, the recording one I believe will take you straight to those options.

Typically the options you find within the app itself only adjust the app, and if windows is already set abnormally high then tweaking the app doesn't help much.

I use teamspeak more than vent though, so I'm not familiar enough with their interface to say definitively whether this applies here.

That's a good point though, Vent/TS volumes can get kind of messy if say you have your speaker volume down real low on the windows side, but mic volume cranked way up on the vent/ts side, then you'll get what OP is describing. Sounds fine to the user but like BLAAAAWWWW WHERE MY EARDRUMS GO to everyone else.
