    London.
    Croydon.

Thats were i live and even tho this is quite clearly a very bias view, theres good reason for this.

Croydon is the 9th biggest city/town in Britian, nightlife is great and the shopping is amazing. The area is decent enough to raise kids and theres good school as well. If you're really up for it, Sutton / Wallington / Carsholton are even nicer areas, but are slightly smaller than Croydon, but have a nicer feel to them and the houses are alot better, but obviously more costly.
In addition, its a 20 min bus ride to Kingston another town with amazing nightlife and shopping.
But lastly, its a 20-30 minute train jounrey into central London, one of the biggest perks about it.

    Wow, a lot of info.

First, my degree is in economics. Second, my mom's side is from Wales (Cardiff specifically) but my grandparents moved to California before my mom was born. Same story for my father but with Ireland instead of Wales. Third, I don't watch TV on an actual TV, only on a computer and I use Hulu or buy DVD sets.

As weird as it may sound, I'd generally like to stay away from London for living. I'd like to visit every now and then, but I'd much prefer living somewhere like Scottish highlands, from what I've seen. I like the snow, I like being cold all the time. I live in Florida and everyone I know who doesn't live here always says "oh, you're so lucky!" False, Florida is hotter than Satan's taint and the people here are absolute pricks. I hate hot weather and I'd like to just get out of here for a few years, maybe permanently.

All the info is much appreciated, I'm starting to get an idea of what I'm looking for. Keep it coming :D

Hulu doesn't work in the UK
    Surfthechannel is the way forward!

Oh and don't move to glasgow, was noted as britains most dangerous city. A lot of stabbings per hour in this glorious nation.

Just a heads up about the TV license, you sadly still need to pay for one even if you just use a TV for PS3/XBox or as a replacement for a monitor :/ Money grubbing BBC

Considering how much our weather is laughed at across the globe I fucking love it. I used to go to Phoenix to see this girl I met on FFXI and as nice as the place is whenever I came home the first thing I thought was how much nicer the air is in England, it has a pleasingly moist feel to it even on a hot day (and I dont mean shitasticly humid, just pleasing moist). Hope you get accepted and welcome England!~

You don't. You only need a TV license to watch or record television as it is being broadcast.

Oh, and Glasgow's not that bad. On one hand, you've got the stabbings and the beatings and the football violence, but on the other hand....

    Three words, my friend.

    DEEP FRIED HAGGIS.

Deep fried just about fucking anything, to be honest. There's a place near my grandmother's house that'll deep fry anything you want. You bring it, they'll fry it. I make a point of having something incredibly unhealthy whenever I go up there. Mars Bar, Bounty Bar, Pizza, Haggis, you name it. I tried to get them to deep fry a bottle of Irn Bru, but they just looked at me funny.

I guess it all really depends on where I can find a job when I start working on moving over but with an econ degree, I figure my options are pretty open. Anyone able to confirm/deny?

Yeh that's true. I didn't get it (the scheme wasn't around then). I worked 32 hours a week for my cash!!! (Yes I was a workacholic because I wanted to buy lots of stuff...)

Apparantly to get a C in GCSE's you need 20% now... Go figure...
Fucking no shit, I believe that. Seriously, every summer it fucking happens. Some retarded cunt of a kid comes out with A* A* A* A* A* A* A* A* A* A* A* A (yes that's nearly full A* and 1 A) and begins QQing/balling out over the news camera fucking crying as if it's the end of the fucking world because he didn't get the final A*

And yes, I do think now with the retarded "record breaking" grades people achieve to get an A you need probably 50% of the exam passed OK.

And 20% to get a C? I bet you need to have put your name on correctly to get an E, and if you put in the exam date/date of birth/(insert some other ID shit here) correctly you get a D.

For your record I worked my ass off for my 3 Bs, 5 Cs and 2 Ds, and I got an EE and a D in college, hahaha. And I quite like where I stand right now, I've got plenty of experience with people.

Experience > grades, shitheads (referring to the kids). (depending on job, but we're talking normal here, not shit like lawyer or pilot...)

I think this EMA thing kills potential labour. People come out of university with 0 work experience and expect to get a £25000/year job? Fuck you and your high horse.

As you can see, I hate our next generation =p

EDIT: Creep: What's your work experience like? And what kinda job are you after?

I would think an Econ degree would be pretty transferable between nations. Maybe start researching financial institutions, investment houses, or even the UK Civil Service online for intern positions, junior financial analysts; that kind of thing.

I just heard a speaker who is British last night (John Patrick) and I thought he was great. He's since moved to Ontario, Canada where he was a professor for a long time.... but after hearing him speak I was like "Man, I should move to the U.K." I just get the sense that the UK isn't as culturally fucked as the US is, and you generally find people that are more thoughtful (minus the "Chavs" apparently)

I know different countries definitely have different things to offer, would I be wrong thinking that people from the UK are generally better educated and tougher skinned? Or is that a complete over-generalization? I'm specifically wondering about my age group too... (22ish) It just seems I could mention someone like David Hume and I wouldn't or Rene Descartes and I wouldn't get blank stares like I do here.

The education thing, I'm not entirely sure. I've met some real retards now and again, but I will chance it and say UK people will generally be more polite/helpful. But it depends how lucky you are really.

I myself will talk to anyone that's willing to talk to me, and go as far as giving up my seat for the pregnant/elderly/disabled on any form of transport/public place, or even get up and help, say, a mother of 2 carry her shopping onto the bus, and off the bus if they get off before me.

As for the thoughtful thing, OUTSIDE London I'm sure if you're out and about on public transport/waiting for bus/train etc, you can easily strike up a convo with anyone (not chav/not foreign, white, usually). by saying "nice day eh?"

For some bent reason the weather gets anyone talking. I hate it, but I admit I've used it a lot myself sometimes when there's no escaping conversations. A few times I came home from work in London there would be 2 or 3 willing to talk, but not on the tube but on the proper trains.

I generally don't like the South. Its ok for a week or so when I'm visiting relatives, but thats about it. Personally, I just hate the accent. Its also a lot busier than the rest of the UK as a larger proportion of the population lives there.

I've only lived in Aberdeen and Glasgow though. Aberdeen alright, but nothing special. Everything is gray and dull. Its also quite cold.

Glasgow on the other hand is a very nice city. I've been living here for over 2 years now. There seem to be so much more to do than in Aberdeen, and the nightlife is a lot better. As for prices on renting a place? As far as I've heard Glasgow is cheaper than Aberdeen. I've paid between £250 and £300 per month, not including bills or council tax (student, yay). I've always shared a flat though, so no idea about how much living alone would cost. Like all other cities, Glasgow has Chavs. Only we call them Neds here and they drink Buckfast, which makes them crazy. in the 2 years I've lived here, I've had very little trouble. I've always lived in the west end though and avoided council estates and such.

And yeah, you can get a lot of things deep fried.

Idk if the chinese people in the chippy would understand that. I'd stick to what they know and say "Battered".
Also if they ask you if you want a "sore finger" with your chips (fries for all you English-twisting yanks) just nod and smile.

    Edit:
Back on topic... Southern England is doing very bad for jobs, I work for a large carpentry and joinery company. Many people are losing their jobs and overtime work has been stopped simply because there is not enough work to go around. My mate is a bricky, he is running out of work fast. A large bank declaired bankruptcy and the goverment has had to bail them out by issuing an emergency "Shares Auction" (is that what they called it?).

You haven't lived 'til you've got asked if you want chilli sauce with your fish supper by a guy with an accent that's a hybrid of Istanbul and Strathclyde.
