I said mindless because they generally don't involve any planning other than your typical action/reaction behavior that is present in every rpg. You could build a simple algorithm that could win every fight without knowing anything about the enemy other than its movement speed and attack range.

The only difference with "normal rpg" is the positioning on the battlefield, but 99.9% of the time, you will simply try to single out enemy's unit, and avoid losing multiple unit to AoE.

Ah!. Then I agree for the most part. Most strategy RPGs are called so because of grids and individual unit ability differences, similiar to chess I suppose.

I do think you would like one of the harder Fire Emblems though, do play one if you get a chance. They don't exactly break the norm that you mentioned very often, though occasionally they do. There are several special abilites later mobs have that can seem kinda unfair, as well as battlefields and victory objectives that can be very hard to complete with what you're given. Also, if you rely on your "strong" characters at the beginning, and don't level up the weaker, easy to die units (and death is permanent), you'd basically end up in an unwinnable battle later when your enemy numbers are overwhelming for just a few good characters and your lowbies are stuck with no exp options. I guess they would test to see just how good your algorithm is at least.

Man, I gotta replay Radiant Dawn now...

A Legend of Dragoon remake, or sequal, using the same battle system.

As nerdy as it sounds, I have half the story in my head and could easily write it out.

An MMORPG with a fighting style like Bushido Blade.
Less gear dependent and more skill dependent.
A lot of customization on characters so that at endgame everyone doesn't look exactly the same.
Lots of mini games like casino games and chess and such for when your not in the mood for killing others.
Weekly/Monthly Server-wide tournaments with top prizes for monies or fancy items.
Good storyline with entertaining cut scenes.
No Walking 400 miles in the snow for stupid hunt 40 whatever quests.
Solo playability and group playability without neglecting each other.
A game where there is always something to do that doesn't require a huge time sink or months of planning to get 1 item that's only slightly better than another item.

I'm a big fan of hack&slash games (DW2/3/4/5/6 99Nights etc..) and the problem I find with those a lot is that they don't do much to make them hard other than giving you 2000 enemies that perfectly coordinate their attacks so that you can't move/can't retalliate or if you get hit once you're f'ed in the a

Of course they also tend to lack in the way of variety too, basically find a move chain that's got a huge splash and stick with it, then when you're going for the commander/general etc. find an attack that does a lot of damage focused on one point

So basically a nice hack/slash with half decent progression system and relatively customizable armor/weapons with a place for every skill you'd be able to get, a bit more emphasis on being good defensively (more rewards for being good defensively I suppose) as well as different ways of being defensive without completely turtling, and maybe a legit challenge that isn't "ok here's 15000 T-rexes with lasers, go" type difficulties (something along the lines of the Jedi battles in SW:FU, those were all really fun and required a bit of timing/thinking imo)

My ideal game would a shooter of some kind, but not a sci-fi one (Halo, Doom, Quake, STALKER, etc). It would be humans vs humans, in some Halo-scale epic war, with the physics and gameplay of MoHA/Max Payne 2, and the environment and overall immersion of CoD4. The weapon selection would be fully customizable, with perks and different armor adjustments. Levels/maps would be HUGE, vastly detailed and breathtaking. There would be vehicles, but on an adventurous level like in Halo 3, not tanks or overpowered units. The story would not have a fixed ending, levels would be sandboxish, and NOT linear. Depending on the damage you do, number of enemies you take out, and rank of those enemies determines how the story progresses. There would be full voice acting, none of that moving mouth and subtitle bullshit.

    Ahhh, I can dream...
