    ANOTHER new PC thread

This one's actually for a friend of mine who's rather PC illiterate. As such, he won't be doing any OCing or in need of too many bells/whistles in his components. He's looking to use it mainly to max out WoW and a few other previous gen games, but also wants to future-proof to some extent. His budget is 1 grand excluding OS, which will be XP 32bit. Here's a suggested build that I put together for him:

    CPU:
    Intel Core 2 Duo E8400

    Mobo:
GIGABYTE GA-EP35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel

    Video Card:
    SAPPHIRE 100245L Radeon HD 4850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16

    Memory:
    CORSAIR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)

    Power Supply:
    PC Power & Cooling S61EPS 610W

    Hard Drive:
    Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

    DVD Drive:
LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe Black SATA Model LH-20A1L-05

    Case:
    ANTEC 900

That comes out to ~$860 including shipping, so it's a bit under budget and (I think)l looks pretty solid. Comments/suggestions please!

    Get a P45 chipset instead of P35.

Other than that I think its pretty good to go.

Make sure you have a 64-bit copy of Windows to work with your memory.

Or you could just run Linux..

I've got a very similar system that I built earlier in the year (albeit with a nVidia 8800 GT video card) and the E8400 is a great processor. It runs pretty cool at it's stock voltages, at least with my ASUS P5K-E mobo, and the entire setup runs WoW at 80/90 FPS outside of raids and really big instances.

If you don't mind shopping from different places, here is e8500 going for $150 (while it lasts). A little bit cheaper than the e8400 from newegg.
