Um, I'm not sure why you went into that rant, it's not like anybody in this thread is "riding the iphone's dick", like you said.
I really like the fact that the Android is completely open, and I prefer the amazon store to itunes. However, as a development platform, I really think it's going to be somewhat limited by the vastly different phone specs the different models going to have. Basically, the developers have to consider whether the audience will have a keyboard, a touch screen, or whatever graphics capability the phone is going to have.
Also, I wish the android platform doesn't have the look of something out of the 90s. Seriously, even the Windows Mobile looks better. The good thing is that it's open, so someone will probably make it skinnable.
The G1 is a crappy phone, seriously lacking in specs. When a good phone with good features, that's when the Android platform will shine. Hopefully by then, the community will have a good collection of apps. How long will that be until that time comes? Who knows.
Anyway, competition is good, so hopefully it does well.

This is my personal favorite, I debated over this and the Iphone 3G for a while until one of my co-workers purchased this and we tested the internet connection speed. We placed the phones side by side and entered Apples website and began loading them at the same time and the 3G took almost twice as long by visual guess. Also how can you go wrong with the Verizon person to person for free plan! Only downfall of this phone is the dialing as well as texting is all done via touch screen so if the screen has any issues the phones basically shit. Also it needs to be calibrated often from what I've heard.
