I'd have to say George Washington. He was beaten during the Seven Years' War but then came back to fight the Revolutionary War. Never smiled thanks to dentures, never wanted to be President, and he pointed out the largest flaw in a democratic system - partisan parties and foreign meddling.

Right after Washington died, what happened? Partisan parties and foreign meddling. Not that Washington always had the right idea of how to run a country but he warned against long-term foreign alliances because of changing times. Look at our alliance with Israel. It's practically made us a target because no matter what Israel does, wrong or right, our government seems to stand behind it.

He is when you really think about it - disabled by polio and he wouldn't let it keep him from walking, authoring the New Deal.. However one thing he did try to do was make an end run around the Constitution with his plan to increase the number of Justices on the Supreme Court, and for me that's a dealbreaker.

As far as presidents go, I would actually go with FDR's uncle, Theodore Roosevelt.

Twain's a great choice, in that through his works (especially Huck Finn) he expressed a greater understanding of how people interact with each other and with the boundaries of society in a time when this country was just starting to move beyond the dreams of those who founded it.
