Fuck, that spoiler pretty much spoiled the end of the game for me LOL...I need to be a little more cautious w/those tags - -.
Oh and to the guy posting about conserving ammo, I didn't really feel like i had to for the most part since I'm just using the initial gun. You end up finding a lot of ammo for the gun you have equipped/inventory, so that was never a problem. I also have a shit load of cash from selling all the other ammo I occasionally got while going through the levels to keep my inventory packed with 100ammo/4 meds at all times. I'm currently playing it on hard and on chapter 11, and I pretty much killed everything that came my way (aside from a couple occasions where I had oh-shi moments and ran the fuck out of the room LOL).
Edit: Although, I guess Ammo might be a problem if you are upgrading and using different guns. Since I'm trying to get that one trophy where you have to beat the game with only the Cutter(Initial gun), I just focused all my power nodes on it first (DMG -> Capacity -> Reload), which really helps.
I also ended up selling quite a bit of the stasis pack, since I ended up with 20~ at one point...since I never really used it LOL
Well you shouldn't be so curious, lol. This won't come as much of a surprise, but there will be a sequel...http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/23/ea...-in-the-works/ :D
That Twinkle Twinkle Little Star shit made me...

Hearing it play in the background had me thinking something was gonna happen, lol.
I agree that the game wasn't particularly scary, I'd say it was more surprising than scary. There were some creepy moments, but to some extent it felt like they were being overly reliant on the whole dead-body-comes-to-life-and-it's-a-monster tactic to squeeze out extra screams. I think having other people on the ship with you took away from the sense of solitude and despair (which I think even bioshock did a better job of).
All in all I think I was expecting something more along the lines of atmospheric horror, the sort of building dread that became really overpowering and scary as shit in games like Silent Hill 1-3 and the Fatal Frame series. Dead Space seems like it's just trying to scare you, and putting on such a big show that you can't help but expect the unexpected. I noticed the same sort of difference between Silent Hill/Fatal Frame and The Suffering, it almost seems like American survival horror developers are afraid to take a risk with nuance and subtlety- perhaps a cultural difference between Japan and the US but I'm not sure.
That being said, I absolutely loved the game. I really hope with the sequel EA doesn't... well... act like EA, they have a nasty habit of using the strength of their franchises to avoid taking risks with gameplay innovation and excuse themselves from having to make upgrades beyond nicer graphics. Called me a skeptic, but I really hope Dead Space 2 has a less formulaic story and enough differences from the original to warrant calling it a sequel. Perhaps I'm spoiled by Insomniac's uncanny ability to improve upon perfection without spoiling it (see Ratchet and Clank) but as much as I loved Dead Space I have extremely lofty expectations for Dead Space 2.
i agree with a lot of people who said that the game's not really a creepfest, but more just trying to shock you. if this had more system shock 2 atmospheric qualities, i'm not sure i coulda played it at all lol.
there are a handful of things that bother me (like how you can't pan over your head in zero-G, and meleeing being mostly worthless since you can't aim it), but otherwise it's pretty awesome overall.
i'm replaying in impossible mode, which isn't too bad at the moment but requires a lot more resource management. i've been using stasis half the time to fight normal monsters, which i barely used on medium, and have been gasping for air on ammo after most fights. while it's challenging to replay it the whole way through on a fresh start, it's pretty frustrating that they don't let you play a new game+ on a different difficulty. what's the point of even giving you all those bonuses if you can't use them against tougher monsters?
hopefully they patch it for PC or something.
Im pretty sure they did that for a reason and I doubt they'll patch it.
I think they did that to add more of a challenge to it, don't think they wanted anyone to go from easy mode with full upgrades to impossible mode and walk through it like it's nothing.
The Resident Evil games were like that too, I think, correct me if I'm wrong.
Dead Space DLC packs coming, 12 of them.
Dead Space receives insane amount of weapons DLC - PS3 Fanboy
Wow, are they serious with trying to sell those?
lolea.
i was finally able to rent dead space last night, l4d wasn't in. looking forward to checking this out tonight.
any tips WITHOUT spoilers? like things i should be sure to do or not do - i'm probably only going to get one playthrough on this, rental onry and i'm fairly busy this week and next.
Stick with the Plasma Cutter, Line Cutter, Ripper and Contact Beam as your four weapons. Upgrade Plasma Cutter first then Line Cutter.
Personally I think your difficulty setting plays a large part on the quality of the experience. The game begins scarily enough but, at some point midway, this horror game becomes much more of an action game, losing much of its environmentally-tense impact.
The point being, it's pretty easy and forgiving on the Normal difficulty level and by playing it on Hard, you're really maximising the survival aspect of the survival horror. This of course rests largely upon an individual's own general gaming ability, but I personally am not a particularly good shootygame player and I honestly found Hard to be just right, with a perfect balance between challenging scenarios/ammo levels and being able to overcome those challenges.
I guess the point I'm making here is that if I, as an averagely able gamer, had played this on Normal then the experience wouldn't have been nearly as enjoyable/intense.
Of course the problem here in your situation is simply one of available playtime. You'll have a (much) easier time racing through the game on the Normal, but I'd argue that you'd be missing out on much of the survival horror that this game did so well. That said, there's still lots to enjoy in the setting, audio, etc.
In all honesty, given a limited timeframe to complete it, it's harder to recommend Hard because exploration of locations really pays dividends in terms of ammo, cash and whatnot. I guess Normal would be more appropriate under the circumstances, however I wouldn't say you'll get the full tense experience.
Um.. don't neglect your kinesis ability (Gravity Gun, basically). Lots of areas have explosive barrels tucked away in corners that can really help even out the odds when you're being swarmed. Also, a cool thing to try is to spend a few rounds of ammo to remove a bladed limb, pick up the limb with your kinesis, then fire it back at the other limb. This should kill the nasty thing dead! And for only half the bullets.
Oh. And be clever with your Stasis juice! It's a remarkable ability - don't squander it.
Rotate at least two save slots - you don't want to be trapped in a situation with critically low ammo and health during an inescapable 'Quarantine' moment..
Aaaand, lastly. (Obvious to most, but I realised this pretty late in the game, like Chapter 4 or something.. >.> ): the crates with lights on top can be smashed open for goodies. Stomp on them or pick them up with kinesis and smash them.
Also:
Demo lands tomorrow on both NA PS3 and 360.
For the EU, the 360's also tomorrow, but the PS3 demo goes up on Thursday.
about to boot it up fir the first time, going to play on hard per your suggestions - thanks for all the tips!
k, didn't get to play for long last night but i may restart on normal since it's just a rental. got through the first part (where you go back to the thing) and think i saved with 3-4 ammo left.
ammo is a little too scarce for someone like me... although for the first few i didn't know what i was supposed to be aiming at or that you could change the orientation of your shots, and of course, i wasted like 3 clips just writing obscenities on a poster with the cutter >.>
great friggin atmosphere / vibe though, RE4 was by far my favorite SH game until this. tops it in about every way so far (granted, only an hour or so in). i see why this game comes so highly recommended... even when you see them coming from far off, you're still freaked out because it takes good accuracy and them being close in order to sever, so you have to let em close a little or waste ammo - and they're FAST once they get moving.
So im trying out the demo and i cant activate the engine? Is this on purpose so i cant progress or what. They should kinda tell you the demo is over... or something
Massive bump on this bitch cause if I post in the equal thread I'll just disappoint people who think there's new info!
Holy hell, how do you beat the final boss on Impossible difficulty?
All I gotta do to get platinum is beat the Hive Mind.
I have the Military Suit, infinite stasis and an inventory full of med packs and ammo, but still can't kill it.
I can get passed the first stage just fine, but then he starts throwing Fat necromorphs at me. I kill the Fattys but theyre all full of the tiny ones that can rape you in a second. Then, if I live passed that, he it gets all insane and starts throwing exploding rocks at me. like 3 of them per second.
This shit is impooooooooooossssssssiiiiibaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaallllll llllllllllll
