In a way, this is really the same thing. If you don't want to live anymore that's between you and only you.

If I had to disagree with one thing in this, is that I think he should have filled out an organ donor card and done it in a more controlled environment that wouldn't damage his organs. He doesn't want to be alive, but there are people that do that could use his contribution. His sacrifice could save several people.

If I were one of the people in the crowd below, nah, I wouldn't be telling him to jump. But I wouldn't be telling him not to. Interfering with a person's suicide attempt is just bad taste in my opinion. It sends a message to other people that they can do stuff like this for attention, who aren't really serious. And the people that really are serious, run into obstacles they shouldn't have to deal with.

People who are suffering from depression aren't in the correct state of mind to decide that they should end their life. It's a mental illness. It's one thing when you want kill yourself because you're suffering from physical pain due to a critical injury/life ending disease, but this is completely different.

Self-termination is definite conflict with self-preservation, which is a trait that pretty much all living thing is genetically predisposed with. So, yeah, the will to self-terminate points to an obvious problem which is likely due to:

A: mental illness that distorts the reality of death or the reality that death is the only answer

B: a genetic weakness

C: a thorough, thoughtful, reasoning to dealing with a terminal illness, such as inhibiting suffering or other the person's conviction to die with what they see as "dignity" by not succumbing to "less dignifying" later stages of their illness

D: Any combination of the above

It's just my belief, that who are we to say who is right and who is wrong and why? Whatever the reason is, I think it takes a pretty strong will, regardless of illness to take that step and anyone that can do it, shouldn't have to deal with anyone else's opinion. It doesn't matter if anyone's telling you to do it or not. If you really want to do it, you are gonna do it. Maybe not then, but eventually, you'll either succeed or be a veggie.

It takes a pretty strong will for depression to overcome the obstacle that is self-preservation. I don't think its a sound argument to say people that are depressed shouldn't be allowed to commit suicide. If you have the will to do it, then kudos to you.

On the bright side, we don't waste our time with attention whores. People who climb out on the ledge with no intention of jumping. These people shouldn't be given a free pass when there are real people out there who aren't screwing around.

If it's any consolation, I think self-termination should be a decision someone should only be able to make after puberty (about 16 to 18 ). By this time, they should be adequately aware of their self-preservation instinct.
