General Tips for FFXI

• Another chocobo tip, hold forward as you zone into another zone you're still riding in, and it will keep you moving a bit.

Cast a spell on anyone in your alliance, without typing their name.

Most people know <pβ> for targeting their own party, less know the alliance command.

I was going to post one in the General Tips thread a while ago but I never got around to it and didn't want to necro it, so here's my tip:

Sound, magic, and blood aggro are line of sight based. It's possible to cast magic right next to arcana if you're around the corner. Same with sneak for an aquan/undead.

To extend this: all aggro is line of sight based. Monsters won't aggro through objects that don't open, barring some rare exceptions (if you can think of any, I can't). Cast sneak/invis behind a rock and you'll be fine.

Edit: Forgot blood aggro! Don't go standing in doorways with low HP, or casting, or walking without knowing what's in the next room. Once you expose yourself all monsters can "see" you and detect you. Cure up, cast sneak and invisible before walking inside (tabbing around also helps).

For those that play on PCs or laptops, you can hit page up or down when looking at lists in the autotranslator, which can save a hell of a lot of time when looking for an item that starts with "R" under items as opposed to holding the down or up arrow down.

Along the same note, you can use left and right arrows to jump "pages" in inventory, mog safe/locker, and storage

Referencing to your example, you can just press R on the keyboard after selecting "ïtem" in the autotranslator.

To put all items in your posession or that you've looked at in your auto translate library. Go to and open the [items] section of auto-translate and exit. Now everything in that list is available as normal auto translate.

When you're browsing AH item lists you can press left and right to page up and down, but that feature might seem to be missing when browsing your mog safe (where left and right switch between inventory and mog safe). However, you can still page up and down by pressing ctrl+left/right.

EXTRA:
If you're obsessive about using auto-translate in macros, you can get complete "Utsusemi: Ichi" etc in auto translate by browsing the spells on AH.

Monsters will aggro through things that don't open/aren't passable, yet provide line of sight, had an Earth ele pop in the tunnel behind me in Eld [S] while killing an Orc, magic aggro through the little window in the switch room, then run all the way from the tunnel, around through the big room, and start nuking me.

Was a little bit surprised.

/cm (chatmode) is wonderful, you can /cm l, /cm t somename, no more targeting yourself and tabbing through that menu, or spamming ctrl+r. Just learned about that a few months ago.

Haha, I love the way you nitpick Max <3. Windows and holes are considered open. For example the see-through parts of spines in zones such as Qufim/Sauromugue/Rolanberry, they're open and magic-aggroable. You can also shoot ranged weapons through them, etc. Walls you cannot perform actions through will never aggro through either. Line of sight to its truest!

Well, it literally just happened earlier, and honestly... I figured the window would prevent aggro because I saw it pop while I was curing myself.

Then I guess it wandered where it could see me.

Same thing applies for the ledges in Beauc, imagine the surprise when you pull a Dark ele from an upper ledge, several minutes away, while soloing Gigas tigers.

to further validate this, go to ifrit's cauldron. the fissures in the ground are considered both impassable AND blocking LoS for some reason. so not only will bombs and other mobs not aggro through them, they won't magic aggro through them in my experience! on the other hand, that little quirk can make pulling suck hard.

It (/cm) lets you pick the chat mode with a command, instead of targeting yourself/selecting it with the dpad (on ps2, not sure what pc does for that), which you can't do during battle for one thing.

You can also /cm t somename if you're in an extended convo, much easier to type that out once than hit ctrl r every time you go to type.

Oh, I still dont quite understand. Why have I never heard of this chatmode sillyness. I will try this out tonight. Trying to cyber isla is hard having to hit Ctrl+R everytime.

At lower levels, goblins can be particularly nasty with their bomb tosses which hit the entire group for big damage.

If you're tanking a goblin, you can prevent the damage to your party. Make sure that you are unlocked from the goblin by pressing * on your number pad. Watch the goblin closely, and as soon as you see it begin to glow, immediately turn tail and run away from your group. The bomb will only hit you, saving your group from a possible wipe.

It takes some practice to get the timing right, but your party will love you for it.

another note on this: if you have hate on a goblin and it is near death and about to use bomb toss, run into it until you're nearly on it and it will kill itself.

The post you quoted is correct because Bomb Toss is an AoE based on the target. Your post, however, is completely incorrect.

Lamia/troll/mamoolbanes are ALL JOBS chakrams that are purchasable for 4k IS from sanction npcs.

They're incredibly awesome for things like 3F/4F bhaflau since you can use your most skilled puller regardless of job, and BRD pulling in merits since they have more range than elegy and don't cause the colibri to do the annoying pause when it "learns" a spell.
