Do not put stupid shit in macros like /p "I SUMMON THEE ICE GODDESS SHIVA!" or /s "ALTANA GET YOUR BUTT DOWN HERE AND RAISE III THIS DUDE!" No one wants to see this at all and it's the fastest way to get on someone's blacklist.

Of course if you really must have it, use /echo instead.

I hate the ones who get home from work 15 minutes before events, and they know this, yet don't bother to get ready on the job they'll be using before they log off, and hold everyone up while they're regearing. And they say, "Well we always start late anyway!" DUH! It's because of YOU!

Yeah, seriously, don't be that guy.

Some have multiple jobs, but I can see your point if they only have 1 useful job

It's usually the guy who has like 6 jobs but is always asked to come BLM anyway. You can safely assume that if you're BLM for 95% of events you'll be BLM for this one too.

People in my old ls would be on level 22 jobs when they logged in, saying, "HAY GUYZ WAIT 4 MEEE"

Summoning macros and the like are annoying as hell.

Raise macros are fine though since it helps avoid duplicate casting on the same target. You obviously won't need it in random parties, but for LS events it helps to put it in linkshell chat.

As a general rule of thumb, ask yourself if its important that everyone else knows what you're casting. Is anyone gonna care that you just cast Refresh on the Pld? Not likely. And if you don't Refresh them, you'll hear about it. Are you gonna care that the Mnk just used Boost? Not likely, but you may laugh the first time depending on the macro. After that you'll resort to /blist. If its something you'll be casting regularly, chances are you don't want to have chat macros for it.

Some things I don't mind seeing macros for:
Raise (Not used that often and helps prevent other people from wasting mp raising the same person)
Weapon Skills (mainly when using skill chains since it lets the Blms know the SC started/closed)
Cover (This way the person knows to stand behind you)
Protect/Shell/Group Buffs (Not used too often except by Smn. Lets them know to get in range of aoe)

Edit: Just saw this one that is a very good one:

As a personal rule, I try to keep at least a 10k buffer on all my jobs. For the ones I use more often I cap the exp. I rarely have to worry about deleveling and can take r1 when needed.

To expand on this, for Beastmasters, when you're soloing some nasty NM or something, track it using widescan. Next, make a macro: /pet Fight <scan>. Then, when you're running for dear life with said nasty NM on your tail, you can simply engage your pet on your widescan target by hitting the macro. No need to turn around and target it.

Having /names off and shadows on will make your screenshots look better! If you prefer having shadows off you can turn them on using /localsettings command (won't show on tab) > screenshot > turn them off again . I use the following macro to take screeshots :

    Spoiler: show
    input /names
    input /localsettings shadows high
    .drawdistance set 5
    wait 0.1
    screenshot png hide
    wait 0.2
    .drawdistance set 1
    input /localsettings shadows off
    input /names

For the love of god, KEEP A BUFFER. Sometime you just can't have an R3. Learn that death in completely inevitable in this game. You WILL die. Alot. Events like Dynamis where many many many people die, there is not enough WHMs to give you all R3s. If you don't like that, buy a RR gorget.

Keep supplied regardless of what you are doing! On my toon (WHM) I carry a stack of oils, powders, echos, and poison pots. I never know which mission I might be swept into, and boy have those things kept me alive.

Learn to sell to an NPC. Skilling up a craft, then selling the product to an NPC can make back 90% of the gil you spent.

When in a party, turn on Auto Sort (or LightLuggage from windower), it'll help maintain your junk for selling afterwards.

If someone is running an event, BE NICE, BE PREPARED. Don't send them tells saying how much the run is sucking or what they are doing wrong. 9/10 They most likely are getting the same thing from 6 other people, and are trying to fix it.

Lean your shortcuts, Ctrl-I for inventory, Ctrl-E for equipment

/? displays all the / commands in the game.

    Abuse mobs' A.I.
For example silencing DRK mobs isn't a good idea since their spells are usually far less dangerous than their melee attacks.
Mobs with access to cure spells tend to use them quite often when their HP drop below 50%, timed stuns can help with that.

Learn what moves at normal movement speed, what at increased speed and what at reduced speed. It's better sleeping/binding fast mobs than attempting to zone their aggro if they move faster than you.

    ^ don't do this. it's a crutch;

spells already generate three lines of text across 2-3 different filters (depending on target) if your healers are having trouble seeing raises, tell them to adjust their filters. adding a /l macro to that is just increasing the amount of spam everyone else has to deal with (Because melee don't -care- that you're raising someone, but you just added a line of text to increase the chances that they miss a stun move or a weaponskill move or someone yelling at them in party chat about something etc.)

yeah, hold feature exists in chat filters, but hold will only hold 3 lines.

the only excuse for this (maybe) is dynamis. and even then if you have enough whitemages to worry about collisions on raises, you have enough whitemages that they should just be worried about their own party and not everyone else's.

edit: I realize this may not make sense to people who don't really play healers; the #1 message type healers are supposed to be watching for is special effects started on/by party and on/by others. - this is the filter that tells you someone is poisoned paralyzed, stoned, doomed, etc; that there's a gaIII coming that you might want to prep a curaga for, etc. - this is the same filter that tells you someone is being raised. If you're missing raise messages then you need to clean up your filters, period, because it means you're missing other messages that are even more important

A word of advice for those of you who just recently hit level 75. Buffer the god damn job out. Either cap it or get near to cap because if you dong you only make yourself the butt of a joke and end up being an annoyance to a WHM usually because you "have" to get an R3 to get your level back. I don't want to hear "Oh it's 4 wasted merits I could have had." Shut the fuck up with that lame stupid excuse.

It's not funny, it's not like you don't have the time and it's not cute. Don't fucking dong yourself or just do it the way some of us do and let the exp roll-over past the cap into merit mode. It's sad as fuck seeing a 75 RNG at Kirin Dong out of an Osode and running around shooting it with no body armor on because he can't be assed to keep his job capped.

There are way to many gearsets on my DRK DRG THF MNK WAR PLD ect that have gear that is 75 only. If I dong, I lose 2/3rds of my abilities along with my gear so yeah I'm 43999/44000 on all of my 75s.

If you're going to have to leave a merit/exp party let the entire party know ahead of time, not just the leader. And for the love of god don't just get a replacement without saying anything to anyone. More often than you'd expect you won't be the only person who wants to disband. There's nothing more frustrating as the person invited to be a replacement than to get out to camp and be told the party is disbanding and the inconsiderate jerk who sent you the invite didn't check with the rest of the party to make sure he was the only one leaving.

Set up a search comment any time you seek party (Menu > Search > Edit Comment). Include things like your tnl, available sub jobs and what areas you can or can't access. This allows party leaders to make sure you'll be the right fit for their party. Also leaders will be more inclined to invite someone they have more info on than someone they know nothing about beyond job and level.

    time saver

    /item "name of item" <t>

you can save some time while trading large quantities of items that npcs will only allow you to trade one-at-a-time. for example, you need 1000 imp. bronze coins traded to an NPC before he'll give you your walahra turban. get 20 imp gold coins and go to nashmau. trade those coins to the npc there for smaller currency.
    /item "Imp. Gold Coin" <t>
use that 20 times, sort your inventory, then use
    /item "Imp. Mithril Coin" <t>
    and so on.

this is useful in quests that gain you fame as well, such as the coronet quest in windurst, trading your silver coins to the warp taru in aht urgan, or trading ur official mirror to the pankration registration npcs.

-Always keep a Remnants Permit on you. This way you won't need a Silver Piece to go in to Nyzul when not using the SP.
when going to einherjar, save some time and take the dvucca isle OP, sneak/invis if u dont have 12% speed, you have to walk by 1 or 2 mummies that aggro sight, sound, and low hp (?). hug the left wall and you'll find an entrance to undersea ruins with an immortal guarding the entrance. if you have a remnants permit, you will automatically zone into the remnants (dont have to select yes/no and saves u time not having to trade a silver coin). when in the ruins, take the first portal on your left (only one portal) and then when u warp, just go straight like you were leaving. you'll zone out into caedarva mire on the west side of nashmau, between nashmau and the graveyard. take a left and you're basically at the graveyard, now only thing left is to navigate 2 lvl 65 imps, 2 chigoes, and maybe 1 skeleton if its between 12-4.

i find this much safer than running through caedarva mire, and less time consuming than running through nyzul isle staging point.

    smn advice

ctrl+b will bring up your pet command menu. (i was a lvl 65 smn before i found out i didnt have to go through 3 menus to get to this).

for smns, you can save space on ur macro pallet by writing in all of your bloodpacts into the same macro and your avatar will only use his own macro...

    for example

    summon garuda

    ctrl0 (rage)
    /pet "Nether Blast" <t>
    /pet "Mountain Buster" <t>
    /pet "Spinning Dive" <t>
    /pet "Predator Claws" <t>

and garuda will use Pred claws. you'll also get 3 lines of error code.

if you dont use windower or recast, i find it best to put attach a couple of lines to my /release <me> macro to time when my next bp will be ready

    /ja Release <me>
    /wait 30
    /echo **30 seconds**

i find that 30 seconds is enough to rest before u stand up, target, and assault and bp again.

    kiting

for kited fights, its a good idea to know who the monster is chasing. this macro will tell u who is being chased. keep in mind, u have to have the monster and person the monster is chasing rezzed on your screen, or it wont work.

    /assist <stnpc>
    /wait 1
    /p <lastst> is chasing <t>

First impressions count. It might seem unreasonable to you, but a lot of players will take an immediate dislike to you if, for example, you talk constantly, spam emotes, over-use smileys (especially ones such as "XD") or type like an AOLer. Obviously you're free to act however you please, inside the limits of the user agreeement of course, and no one's telling you you have to become a mute and can your use of the letter "u". However, if you care about your reputation and how you come across to people in FFXI, you should probably take some of the things I mentioned into account

Also, OPs. They are a main form of transportation around old zones, so try to get those as soon as you can. You need to bring supplies to an Outpost under your home country's control to be able to warp there.

Also, if you don't have a mage sub, or aren't subbing NIN, bring Sneak Oil and Prism Powder wherever you go. Reraise Earrings are nice, too, when you have the money for them.
If you don't get OPs and teleport crystals, you will Be That Guy who either holds up, inconveniences, and angers everyone on a mission or quest, or will suddenly find yourself kicked from doing a mission or quest. You'll also spend hours longer doing stuff than you needed to. These are important.

Mages should always bring Silent Oil and Prism Powder too. You never know when you'll be around magic aggro and need to reapply them. Everyone needs these in Salvage too, because you might not have access to your magical versions.

I usually don't bother to sneak/invis. Just talk to the immortal right after they hit you and you're fine, it's hard to get event skipped on that CS.

The best advice in this whole thread. Cap exp cap exp cap exp cap exp. It only takes like 1.5-2 hours in a merit party to do, so do it! Also always leave it on "Exp Mode". This way, when you die, you kill 1-2 mobs and your capped again. If you do Sky and Sea, you often wont even need to merit to cap off your job as much, as farming mobs there will do it for you.
