During their Fall Press Conference today, Nintendo have - as expected - announced a new version of the Nintendo DS. Called the Nintendo DSi, it eschews the GBA slot (boo!) in favour of a slight downsizing (it's a little thinner) and a range of improvements. The handheld's screens have been enlarged, and will now be 17% bigger (at 3.25 inches) than those found on the DS Lite. As for the rumoured additions, both have proven to be correct, with "audio enhancements" made to the handheld, while it will also now include a .3 megapixel (640x480) camera. And that's just the start of it. The DSi also features an SD memory card slot, making it possible to take pictures with the DSi and then view them on the Nintendo Wii. The DSi features a built-in browser, and it's possible to download games and keep them on the DSi.

For digital delivery purchases, there is a DSi Shop, from which users can download DSiWare from. Pricing categories for the DSiWare are: Free, 200 points, 500 points and "Premium" or 800 points. Customers will get 1000 free points to spend at the DSi Shop that are good until March 2010.
The DSi will be released in Japan on November 1. It will retail for ￥18,900 (USD$180), and will be available in two colours, white and black. It will be released in other markets sometime "next year".

Personally, it's pretty much a given that they'll force us to slowly buy one because they'll put a few important titles that are DSi only. That kind of pisses me off that they didn't save this technology (or lack of... your call) for their next handheld, but meh.

I wont be buying it for quite awhile, my DS is fine and this doesn't seem much better than a normal DS. Less battery life than a DS, a crappy camera which isn't even as good as the one in my phone, and no GBA port, and the lcd screen is the same quality as the one in the current DS (only 1/4 an inch bigger), not to mention its much more expensive than a DS when it doesn't offer that much (Said to be $170 retail).

The Nintendo DSi sounded nice until I realized the battery life was pathetic. This is the main reason I liked the gameboy over Game Gear or PSP. But then, they are somehow making something that is easier to pirate than the DS. EASIER TO PIRATE THAN THE DS.

Lack of GBA slot hurts for me. I still play quite a few of my GBA games, but don't like carrying it around on trips and such along with my DS, so I'll only get one of these as a last resort.

The Nintendo DSi sounded nice until I realized the battery life was pathetic.

It seems to have 5 levels of brightness compared to the lite's 4, so long as level 4 on the DSI is the same as level 4 on the lite, the difference would only be about 1-2 hours (4-6 hrs vs 5-8 hrs).

Heck, for all we know, level 3 on the DSI could be the same as level 4 on the lite meaning that it would have better battery life. There's just no way to tell until someone gets their hands on one.

My Fire Emblem games are shaking their collective fist at Nintendo at the moment.

I'm pretty sure I may get one later, but I'm not going to pick it up right off the bat. I'm still using one of the first generation DS and it's doing just fine.

Do you have a ds original? Are there many games you want to play on ds?

Personally even if I didn't have a ds when this thing came out, I would still just buy a regular ds lite to save some money. I wouldn't use any of these features they added, and I barely play my ds anyway. Haven't used it since that zelda game...
