nah i got all the bad upgrade done, i'm working on mercury, faint, marrow and i'm still in NG1 so by the time i get to NG4 i will have all of them done. btw ty to the damn bladestone my soul level is 161.

i got it on pure black, farming the black skeleton on hidden passage(4-2) and the other one from the black phantom samurai skeleton(near the old hero archstone) soulsucker is the best for the black phantom instant kill and double souls.

I was under the impression black phantoms don't respawn though, unless all those red-eye skeletons count as them also?

everytime i kill them i jump off a cliff, i'm always in soul form

There are plenty of Black Phantoms that respawn. The specific NPCs don't, but generics do.

I'm incredibly new to this game (received today), and trying to get into the swing of it.

A few questions, which I'm sure have already been answered in this thread, but search is failing me.

1) Player souls you see, I understand that is people playing atm (or recently?) but do the colors make a difference (blue yellow white etc?)

2) When you get so far in a world, as in like world 1, can you return to the nexus with the souls you have, and return with the levers that you have flipped still active, or does it all revert back

3) Whats some general things I need to look for/be aware of during my first few hours with this that would be helpful? Any special equipment to keep my eye out for? I did find that Cling ring, which is nice. And i also have a Bastard Sword, which I can't one-hand yet effectively, and like a Mailbreaker or something. Tactics to keep me alive longer (Soldier)?

White = Ghost of a player playing their game normally, has no affect on yours other than giving you a heads up that their may be a trap ahead as you watch them potentially die.

Blue = Blue Phantom, which is a player in soul form assisting a living player in their game

Yellow = Living NPC (Ostrava in 1-1 is the first instance you'll see of such an NPC)

Red = Black Phantom, both as a mob and an invading player

2) When you get so far in a world, as in like world 1, can you return to the nexus with the souls you have, and return with the levers that you have flipped still active, or does it all revert back

If you're of a melee type player, be sure to get yourself a good bow asap. I've saved myself countless deaths after having obtained one and upgrading it a couple times early on in the game. I always keep at minimum 70 arrows on me at a time, although your vitality earlier on into the game may disallow that due to lower item burden.

Valuable information I was looking for, fantastic. I'm having a hard time determining what I want to spend souls on in the first place, be it armor, weapons, or what have you.

It's in the field with the two dragons in the pathway you head left to get to, rather than straight away which leads to a shack you can knock open to roll boulders out of to mobs on a narrow passage, although you're fucked at getting it if the red one is there, which only leaves on pure white tendency or if you kill it I believe.

I've just been sticking to the Adjucator's Shield (you can obtain it later on), slow HP regen, and light as hell. I'd lose my naked speed with Purple/Steel without rearranging what gear I'm wearing. ;/

And back onto the bow subject, whenever you get a Compound Long Bow, save it to upgrade to a Sticky Compound Long Bow (check the wiki for upgrade information), as it's essentially one of the best bows following the White Bow which you can obtain in 4-2.

I don't have anything atm for ranged attack. Sounds like I need to invest in this. Will he just sit there and take it, or will I need to do some ducking and diving?

He's on a small mountain breathing fire, you can shoot him and he wont do anything. dont worry to much about the bosses keep lvling up stats if u can, btw what job did you take?

And another thing, Do you have to store souls, or once you enter the nexus, they stay fixed at the current number? Or does it even matter, and when you die, you drop to 0 regardless?

From what i get u haven't beaten the 1st boss, when you do you can use them with the maiden in black to lvl up or you can buy shit from other NPC.

the 1st boss is easy, save the firebombs and turpentine on him since he's weak to fire.
