Going to hit 163 (while trying to farm a bladestone) then finish this round and goto NG++ in order to finish my spells. Spent about 15~ hours on a pure bladestone with no drop

Has anyone here even beaten Demon's Souls on their first playthrough entirely without using 'cheap' strategies on bosses?

I know I'm guilty of having done it on at least half of them on my first run, although I did beat them all (well, aside from Flamelurker. FUCK that boss) legitimately in NG+.
(well, I still used the flame brazier trick on Maneater, but let's be honest, if you don't use that odds are you'll just get knocked off the bridge at some point, especially when you're sandwiched by both of them)

I legit beat Tower Knight without spells on my first playthrough, and the False King. I had the NPC help me on Penetrator because I couldn't beat him solo with just meleeing. Maneater was easy as fuck, never died to him. Did Flamelurker legit too. I may have died a combined 100 times, but it's rewarding when you finally beat those fuckers without cheap tricks.

Shrine of Storms, go to the Crow and drop the brass telescope you get from Ostrava in 1-1. Come back and the ring will be on the ground. You can get it from 3-2 also I think... in the swamp.

I did my first playthrough offline before I had internet hooked up in my room, so I went in pretty much clueless to every boss. I think I finally discovered how useful bows could be for the last boss I had available, which was that flying manta boss. Shield + lance for every boss with no magic 8) I think the only bosses I found troublesome were 1-4, 1-3 until I found out you could rescue Biorr to help, 4-2 and of course Flamelurker. I got kind of lucky with Maneater I guess - one try and no falling.

Second play through I found a way to cheese pretty much every boss (that wasn't button mashing easy) with arrows, which is kind of disappointing. Flamelurker I got stuck on a bone somewhere.

My first play I tried hard to wear heavy armor even though I couldn't move in it. I stubbornly stuck with a sword for basically the entire run and never used any other melee weapons.

World 1:

First run at Phalanx I wasn't bright enough to get them to break off and hit them from behind. The whole fight was me hiding behind a pillar and occasionally jumping out to slight them shield side.... long fight but got it on the first try.

I beat the Red Dragon because I wanted to... otherwise I probably wouldn't have even gotten a bow.

Tower Knight, after lots of failing because I didn't realize how much more quickly you could move with lighter gear I just sniped his ass because I couldn't dodge him melee.

Penetrator... I did super legit and didn't even have Biorr to help. I just used a lot of grass and melee'd the fuck out of him. Won on my first try.

False King only took too tries. I eventually got good at hit and running. By the time I was doing him I'd learned to wear light gear so I could easily double roll backward.


World 2:

Armor Spider was kicking my ass melee because I just didn't have the Stamina, a decent enough shield or the flame resistance to take it. I sniped him. On NG+ I probably would've puss'd out but I ran out of arrows and melee'd about 40% of his life and found that it wasn't too bad with a PFS+10. Felt a lot more rewarding that way.

Flamelurker gave me tons of trouble at first, but I eventually got pretty good at hitting him right after my shield at a him and then running away to get stamina back. Beat him totally legit. On NG+ I had to rethink things and he's what finally pushed me to use spear...and I haven't looked back even though I have Northern Regalia and Meat Cleaver and all that jazz. I figure I'll hang him up on the bones in the future just to make him less of a pain.

Dragon God made me learn Magic Arrow and at the end I sniped the chin like pussy. It's more of a puzzle than a fight so I just don't feel that cheap about it.

World 3:

I screwed up on Fool's Idol the first time and had to come back after killing Liar. Was cake then and on NG+

Maneater was one of my biggest griefs the first time around until I figured out I could burn the first one down with a bow before it got to me and trap the other one on the brazier. I figure that's just how I'm gonna roll forever because I'm just not good at that fight.

Old Monk I lost many times to PCs because they just had better gear. Many I think got their gear and deleveled to twink or made a second character who they specifically crafted to kick people's asses. Most people I've had invade a chumps, but these people were changing weapons constantly with shit like Scraping Spear and trying to break my shit while bleeding me with a sword and then smashing me with Northern Regalias, Meat Cleavers or Dragon Bone Smashers. Finally someone invaded and must've gotten bored before I got to the top and I raped the NPC monk handily... what a joke.

World 4:

I sniped Adjudicator hard and never even saw him until NG+ where he'd one shot me with his tongue. I did him legit on NG+ and he's damned easy.

I can't even remember the next boss's name because he was so damned easy. I did him legit first try.

Storm King was also a joke first time with a bow.

World 5:

Sniped Leechmonger first time and on NG+. Melee strategy seems like ridiculous amount of complication.

Dirty Colossus was a joke both times and I did him legit.

I totally snipped Astraea. The fackin' fetuses were the scariest thing there and nearly got me while I was trying to gather loot.


I've tried on NG+ to do a few legits where I felt like I was cheating the first time around, but if I've beaten them legit from now on I just won't bother. I'll use the cheapest method possible just to avoid any risk because some of the levels are more a pain than the bosses.

Just drop the item and load your game, it'll be there. Mobs don't respawn when you reload your game either.

You'll pick one up later in 3-2 so it's really not worth it buy.

Just drop the item and load your game, it'll be there. Mobs don't respawn when you reload your game either.

Also be sure the crow actually responds when you drop it. If she doesn't, pick it up, and drop it again but closer.

I guess it depends on how you wanna roll. I'd suggest checking it out on the wiki and seeing what your other options are for any given boss soul and if it doesn't seem like you'd be missing out on anything for your particular play-style then grab a spell with it.
