    Crackling sounds

i guess its been happening for a few weeks now, i dont really remember when it started, but i keep getting nasty crackling sounds in ffxi, notice it mainly on the login screen but maybe thats just because its set louder than ingame sounds. dont have the problem with any other games/music so any ideas what is causing it?

If all your other applications' music isn't crackling at the same output levels, there could be something wrong with the files themselves. Coincidentally, a friend of mine had this exact issue: corrupt sound in FFXI, and FFXI alone. Unfortunately, he has yet to be able to repair it. Checking his files, reinstalling the game from scratch, and so on, so forth, has not remedied the problem.

That doesn't mean you're doomed. If you haven't tried yet, run a file check and see if anything needs to be replaced.

also, make sure it's not just a bad set of speakers. pipe some other sounds thru them and see if anything funny sounding spills out.

It sounds like you're having the same problem my friend had, then. Nothing fixed it for him.

All you can do are run through the usual steps: try replacing your sound drivers, try using a different sound card, and try playing at different volumes.
