Vancouver is nice, it's expensive to live here though. 1 bdr range from 800 - 1200 a month for something that isn't in a drug hotel/bed bug hotel. Out of curiosity are you going to BCIT or another school? If your campus is going to be in a place called Burnaby or Surrey which are both in the Greater Vancouver area then rent can be somewhat more reasonable. If you want any more info PM me and I'll give you the lowdown.

Late to reply, but the school is Vancouver Film School. Only thing about where it is that I know is that the program I'd be going there for is 1380 Burrard Street.

Anyway, looks like Ruutu and Cole are doubtful for tonight. I've still not seen the hits/etc. that have taken them out of the game. I do remember seeing Cole hurting, but I never saw the hit. I didn't even hear Ruutu's name when he got hit or whatever happened, completely slipped my mind that he played for the Canes until the announcers started talking about his injury.

Cooke's hit on Cole could have easily been avoided. in fact, it shouldnt have even happened. the play was either frozen by the goalie or going the other way, i cant remember which. clearly shouldnt have happened.

I have no problem saying Cooke's hit was dirty because it was. He said flat out after Goncahr was put out by Ovechkin that if he had pulled that hit he would have been suspended. So I'm guessing the NHL is now in a bit of a moral quandary. They didn't suspend Cooke. But if they did, how fucked up would that look? It would have essentially proven beyond the shadow of a doubt that the NHL is more concerned with their revenue and tv ratings than the health of it's players. The NHL is just not prepared to take that black eye, hence no suspension for Cooke.

well, i honestly cant remember a time someone was suspended for a knee on knee hit. it happens more often than not, and it rarely gets a suspension. a 2 minute penalty is all it will get.

my guess is because its not so much the fact you are trying to hurt someone, more that you dont want them to get by you. if someone breaks a finger by hooking a player, they wont get suspended for it.

9 times out of 10 I think it's easy to tell which knee on knee hits are completely accidental. Hence no suspension. But when you get blatant ones like Ovechkin's and yes, Cooke's those should be suspensions.

To explain further, knee-to-knee should rarely merit a suspension, if ever. I'm with Abraxas on this one, it's no more malicious than any other play resulting in an injury where someone is trying to make/avoid a check, hook, etc. Sure, the NHL disciplinary system isn't the best in the world, but not suspending for knee-to-knee is fine by me. Even the great big homer that I am, I didn't think Cooke should be suspended. Christ, he didn't even get two minutes for that. More to the point, what you call "blatant" by Ovechkin, I call a bang-bang play, and your "in general" discussion of knee-to-knee pretty much only references Ovechkin and Cooke. So suck it.

Also, fuck all you guys, I can't watch the Pens now without thinking "no beatin' Mark Eaton." Fuck.

I can accept that. I just don't agree with you and Abraxas on this one. To me it's something that has the potential to end careers. Time to play the what if game. What if the NHL had a more strict policy during the late 80's all the way up until now? Would Ulf Samuelsson have nailed Cam Neely? Thus contributing to the end of his career? I can understand lesser penalties like hooking, slashing, interference. But when it comes to things like kneeing, boarding, and spearing I really think that the NHL should have a zero tolerance policy. If you're not going to suspend people that's fine. Do what the NFL does with players who initiate a helmet to helmet hit, hit them in their wallets. As much as I hate Ovechkin, what happens if he hurts his knee seriously on the Gonchar hit? We could lose one of the most explosive, exciting players the NHL has ever had. Now if the NHL would actually institute a strict policy and actually enforce it, things like that would definitely cut down over the course of a season.

Anyway, I think the NFL analogy is a good one. Obviously you can't spear a guy making a catch across the middle, but I think they've gone a little too far in enforcing some of these rules, both on the field and in terms of fines and suspensions. Stuff like shoulder-to-helmet is now drawing 15-yard flags and fines, and don't get me started on roughing the passer. When every defensive coach in the world tells you to "tackle low" and your instincts take over, and then the running back or receiver goes low, is that really malicious? It's just like if you go to make a hip check, and miss or try to stop, and hit a guy knee-to-knee. Give him a penalty if the refs think it's intended, but suspensions for shit like that are a little much for me in a contact sport.
