I'll take a smart WAR over a dumb PLD anyday when it comes to tanking. Good PLDs can tank the world, cause they've been buffed up over time, but there's nothing wrong with a WAR tank that knows what they're doing.

Yea, he is pretty damn good at WAR tanking. And I'ma steal him from you one of these days Vedd. =P

    Situationally, yes.

But for the most part, in situations where they can tank, other DD jobs can likely do the same if they have a defensive sub (/sam rarely, or /nin).

So, it really depends on how you classify a tank, really. Hell, whm/nin could tank effectively counting shadows *shrugg*.

    2. Making a WAR a tank is holding down a DD. Every WAR tank is gonna try to get in some damage, which is where they start sucking at tanking. WAR innately shouldn't be tanks because most WAR just wanna go nuts on the mob.
    3. If WAR seriously want to tank they need to use a shield or something other than just axe/axe or sword/axe etc.

    1. ever heard of a "oh shit" macro, I have one for my war that swaps in 65 +VIT, +300 HP, 400 DEF and -15% physical dmg taken rings in, its very handy when you suddenly get hit without shadows/eyes for 80 dmg instead for 250!
    2. Being able to tank AND DD is not holding back a DD. Its makeing the PT/Run etc more efficient. I am able to go nuts on mobs and keep my shadows/eyes up while looking to switch for the oh shit moment into my "oh shit" setup.
    3. wow, seriously the weapon choice is situational, But I would go anytime with a Greataxe. That thing realy shines in holding hate via DMG. off course it depends what you want to tank and what sub you gonna use.

you should maybe try to put some effort into your WAR makeing it a tank, you are missing out a lot of fun :/

    Can I not tank?

Enmity merits, full enmity voke macro, full merits, kickin ass in the right gear...

What are you doing if you aren't getting faceraped from time to time?

Will it be as pretty as other jobs?

    No.

I've tanked Nyzul runs, yep, /Dnc. Works great, solo mobs on everything, Tank tougher mobs with the group.

Besides the little stuff though, yeah, pretty much /Nin 99% of the time, /Sam will get by once in a blue moon for big stuff. It will rule for merit, but that don't count.

Gaxe only though, I want to hurt the shit, and get more parry ups.

I've Tanked and kited shit before.
Up to Level 60 (back in the day) I /mnk'ed.
End game I've pretty much resorted to /nin on most things I've tanked. Depending on what it is, I don't think it'd be THAT hard to get a war to tank with /Sam really.

As was said earlier, WAR can tank certain mobs in certain situations. Personally, in the dunes, and early leveling groups... I rather have a war tank instead of a NIN.

And as of person above saying WAR cannot tank period, GTFO

WAR can tank in the sense that every other job can as well.

well in all honesty, yes war can tank but depends on the situation like its already been said. LOLNYZUL is a joke to tank cause well you just zerg everything down so first voking and having a mob there for maybe 20 seconds isn't difficult.

Your not gonna be taking a war to main tank shit of difficulty, because they dont have much in the way of getting shadows back up (shield procs/stuns/stoneskin/fast cast) on their own, but i guess with some top notch support maybe you can hold something or kite.

In merits its an obviously decent tank because its DDs and vokes...i'm still waiting on coming across a nice war/sam that isn't a complete MP sink or involves me tanking mnk/nin cause i'm out DDing their ass

Why do people think war's can't tank bigger things? If they sub /whm they can tank a lot of hnm (I can't say all since I haven't seen them on all), it's just other jobs are a bit more effective. But if geared right war/whm is hella fun and is effective.

If your going into a HNM fight with a WAR as your main tank you need to revaluate, can a WAR/NIN step in a time of need to tank a Faf Odin or w/e hell yes.

A war/nin can easily be a viable co-tank in a low man situation. Would not depend on one as a MAIN tank though. As stated before most of their hate is generated off their damage.

If PLD tanking scores 10 and NIN scores 9.5 or 9, WAR's tanking score should be no more than 7. However, 7 is enough in some situation.

I'll take a WAR that knows how to tank over half the PLDs I see trying to.
(Not saying that I'm that good, I'm far from it, but man I've seen some horrid PLDs)

Seriously, where are all the No votes coming from, back it up people, give us a reason to even consider why a WAR can't tank.

my reason for a "no" vote is based purely on comparing it to a real tank job (pld and nin)

a war really doesn't out tank a sam, mnk, thf, or (insert other DD/nin job) vs any lower powered monsters, heck those two jobs have the evasion to accually tank some of the things a pld would have more difficulty on.

asking if war is a "tank" is like asking if pld is a "healer", yeah they can do it, but it's almost never the best choice. jobs are classified as melees, tanks, healers, mages based on what they do better then other jobs. Atleast that's how I see it.

even IRON was kind of unorthodox back in its heyday though. about the same time IRON was teaching Bismarck that Wars (war/whm in particular) could tank wyrms, there were groups on other servers using pld and ninja tanks on wyrms (with or without weird subs) - so it wasn't like war tanking was ever pervasive after the second wave of NA 75s hit sky.

Although I still remember early dawn of time sky runs when you were lucky to have more than one paladin or ninja in an entire linkshell (or more than one bard for that matter), and then we used war tanks all the time (hell, war/thf tanks sometimes.. ) but that wasn't so much a preference as it was a situational necessity.

edit: I voted tank btw. but I consider monk, sam, etc tanks too. hell. I've tanked big things on my whm before using barspells and utsusemi (< fun as hell btw)

I didn't mean to say IRON > all. Just that people used to do it a lot for a period of time, which says to me that war can be considered a tank job, even if they aren't the "best" tank job.
