One thing I didn't like about the movie was that they didn't spend enough time on Scientology. Basically the clip you saw on the daily show was about 90% of the time they spent on it.

Maybe it is a good thing that they didn't show more about Scientology because that would mean people would actually think of it as a religion.

This movie does look pretty interesting, I might check it out when it comes to DVD.

It's a call for rational people to stand up cry out against the unstable people in the western and eastern world who think its the end of day as foretold by their religion and have access to destroy the world (nuclear weapons, global warming etc). In one of the early conversations he understands the purpose of religion in a society to provide you comfort when you have none (the example he uses is that of a death row inmate) but hes arguing that otherwise religious nutjobs need to stfu.

And I would argue most of the people he does talk to are extremists because they are unable to provide a cogent answer to how religion functions with science and the modern world. The only people he talks to that give him frank and honest answers are the exmormon guys, and the 2 priests. Also the pot smoking religion guy gives him some straight answers but that has more to do with the fact that that religion has no real extremist view. The Muslims he talks to in Amsterdam don't give him a straight answer, even the gay guys.

The Jewish Rabbi isn't a self hating Jew, I think its bullshit he went to Ahmedinejad's holocaust convention but for basically the Wahhabi/born again version of orthodox Jews, Zionism is secondary to living by the Torah/Talmud(which is a big reason why Ariel Sharon's Kadima party stood a big chance at succeeding at peace in Israel since their base could not give a fuck if he gives away some land for peace as long as they keep their culture). But realistically the rabbi only seems like a bigger nutjob in the US where the seething sect of Zionists shape all discussion of Middle Eastern policy.

He didn't spend more time on Scientology because none of them would talk to him probably; he had to trick most of the evangelicals into talking to him and honestly he easily tears apart its bullshit in the short time its given (also theres like 12+ hours of footage left on the cutting room that Larry Charles is gonna make into a show on HBO so more scientology stuff might surface there..)

Its open to interpretation certainly but I think its both; he wants those who are religious to re-evaluate what's being done by the actual religious nutjobs in their religion in the name of their god(s). But he is also saying that being religious period is nutty since he pokes holes in the dogma of the major religions. Also he has an interview with a neurologist regarding what is happening in the minds of people that are having religious experiences or w/e to show that its crazy to be religious.

I honestly liked it, the only major religion that comes out completely unscathed, yet suffers from the same issues he touches on in others is Hinduism.

Overall I liked it, he kept the tone as funny as he could, but he did ask hard, thinking questions of every religion that were not really answered by anybody but this hilarious priest in the Vatican. The end does get a little depressing, which is natural considering some of the viewpoints that are brought up by these nutjobs he talked to, but overall its definitely worth watching, and I'd be interested to see what the rabbi at the synagogue I used to, and that my family still goes to thinks about it since he was always a more or less a thoughtful guy to have a discussion with (even if he likes Joe Lieberman ). If you liked Borat or Real Time with bill maher youll like it.

The 2 Vatican priests were awesome, and funny enough I think they were the least fanatical of anyone else in the film.

lol. This definitely does not hold for every religion; but sure if you want to say, for example, that every Christian takes the Bible literally and thinks we were made from dust then sure, it holds. The fact of the matter is some people just have religion and treat it like a guideline on how to live and that's fine, the part atheists love to assert is how crazy the parables might be.

Just because something isn't needed doesn't mean it's imperative it be expunged from all use. We still use Windows 3.1 for stuff but it's definitely not needed and could easily be upgraded. It shouldn't be an active process it should be natural.
