Blizzard Entertainment has announced that it will lay off approximately 600 employees worldwide after “a review of its business based on current organizational needs.”
The company says 90% of the employees being let go aren’t in development-related departments, and the World of Warcraft team was left untouched. The development schedules of Diablo III, Blizzard DOTA, and the next WoW and StarCraft II expansions will also not be affected.
Blizzard is also looking to recruit new developers for a number of positions.
“Over the last several years, we’ve grown our organization tremendously and made large investments in our infrastructure in order to better serve our global community. However, as Blizzard and the industry have evolved we’ve also had to make some difficult decisions in order to address the changing needs of our company,” said CEO Mike Morhaime in a press release.
Although WoW continues to lose subscribers, Activision Blizzard isn’t hurting financially. The company announced record earnings in a call earlier this month.
Still, 600 employees is a significant number, especially considering that the whole of Activision Blizzard only employs 5,000 people worldwide
