If you live alone you can get by with minimal cutlery and plates. Hell if you're feeling ghetto you can eat off of paper plates 90% of the time.

I lived for 6 months with roughly two full place settings' worth of cutlery/plates/bowls. I washed dishes by hand every day and it took literally 60 seconds out of my day. How exactly was I wasting time/water?

You must do a lot of baking.

I made a habit of washing dishes, particularly pots/pans, the second I was done using them, while they were still warm. Quick swirl of water + soapy sponge got rid of anything that wasn't burned on.

Yeah, I actually do bake a LOT. I have a cake in the oven right now as we speak and I made some lemon chicken breasts in the oven earlier (I hate washing the pan when I make this). I really need to start washing them immediately too but I'm too much of a procrastinator =/

I always did dishes by hand Q_Q. I don't really like my dishwasher. When I used one in college, we ended up never using our cabinets and just storing clean shit in the dishwasher.

The pots and pans are a pain in the ass to clean... I like to roast chicken it'd always get messy. That is until I got my rotisserie machine, small and very easy to clean. The chicken tastes good and it's not as dry anymore (tem I'm assuiming, damn ovens).

I'm not disputing that, I do the same thing. Just saying that a dishwasher is easier, cleans better (usually), and is more water efficient (so long as you don't be retarded and use it to clean small amounts). Obviously if you can't fill it up it's sort of a waste, but in my opinion it's usually a better option.

The only time I had a dishwasher and didn't use it was when it wasn't working.
The only time I wash things beforehand is when I know it can't handle it, like burnt in crap that you need a Brillo for.

What temperature are you making your cake at? I make them at anywhere between 350 to 400 (depending on the recipe. You should be following the advice given in the recipe), and that usually cooks them pretty good and evenly. It sounds like you're cake isn't completely finished, which could mean the oven is too high so you have to take the cake out too early, or too low so that they don't cook in the proper amount of time.

Do you open the door of the oven a lot while baking? That can ruin it.

There could be too much liquid/not enough cake flour in the batter, or too much butter.

Also, I need to get a rotisserie machine too. If it makes clean up easier, then it's worth it.

also depends on the type of pan your using a 13'' x 6'' is different then an 8''x 8''

House with 7 people, used to be 9, don't have a dishwasher. Back in England there was 5 of us and we never had one. Only takes 5-10 minutes to wash, dry and put away. Never seen the need to buy a dishwasher.

you can just put your dirty dishes in a dishwasher and set it to run at night @_@ boom clean dishes in the morning. so awesome.

I'm going to echo the "wash them while they're still hot" sentiment and go further to say: Just run water in them, sit down and eat, come back and wash. It has the same effect, and your food doesnt have a chance to get cold (i dont really like hot food, but thats irrelevent--which is why i'm telling you guys :DD)

One of these days I'm gonna buy myself an apron so i dont have to change clothes (if I'm wearing them >_>) to cook. A frilly one--oh yes (*'-')

If I had a kitchen big enough to fit one in - I'd buy a dishwasher today. Especially since when my other half cooks - he uses every single plate and piece of crockery in the entire house it seems.

As it is I'm still slumming it without one (hopefully when we move I'll be able to have one... /dream).
