No. The shining force games on ps2 were junk, and this doesn't look any different.

Looked like it could be good. Never played any of the Shining Force games though, but the battle system looks like it could be fun.

Looks like an interesting advancement of the old style (turn-based 2d strategy, like the Fire Emblem series or a 2D version of FFT) of battle. The Genesis games were good, SF2 was probably the game I played most until FF7 came into my life, I still remember all 42 fights in that game...heh.

Looks more like a cross between Makai Kingdom (Movement, attack range, partnering up) and the 2D Tales games (No telling if the mobs could fight back/counter in what we saw, though). I'll agree it looked nothing like the PS2 counterparts which were like some Diablo rip-off, but from what little we saw, I'm not quite confident it's truly faithful to the originals, either.

Guess for it to be a "Shining Force" game, it'd need the following:
    1) 100 EXP needed for every level, how much you get per action varying on target level or the action itself (Healing, buffing, item use).
    2) There's some aspect of promoting a character that, while weakening at first, unlocks new equipment options and eventual superior stat growth.
    3) Typical spells (Blaze, Freeze, Bolt, etc.) and classes (Knight > Paladin, Priest > Vicar, etc.) with possible alternatives as seen in 2 (Priest could become a Master Monk with a Vigor Ball).
    4) Presumably some ancient evil getting awakened that's eventually defeated by a sword of good and evil components (Chaos Breaker in 1, Holy Sword in 2, I think).

Far as story specifies go, the games were never enthralling enough to really hold up to today's standards, but at the time they were decent. I've actually grown fond of the GBA remake of SF1, as it added a couple new elements while tweaking some old ones, leaving it feeling more advanced than SF2, but some might call that blasphemy. Regardless, there's potential, but poo @ DS (largely since I don't have one).

I only ever played SF2, all I can remember about it is that I really liked it though.
I'll be keeping a close eye on this one.

I'd be lying if I said this game didn't look good at a glance, but after the PS2 games (Shining Tears, etc), I'm almost hesitant to buy any more Shining Force games. (Anyone who's played any of those knows exactly what I mean when I say that.) That aside, it doesn't look anything like them in terms of combat, and from how it appears from the trailers, it could be pretty awesome. I'll wait until we hear more about the game to make any sort of determination on it though. D:

i actually enjoyed shining tears, although not a true shining game, EXA and NEO were pure shit though, with the most annoying voices ever. All I have to hear is "Hot stuff coming through" and i cringe.

I laughed at that waaay harder than I should have. But yeah, I suppose Shining Tears wasn't the worst of them.

well i think tears as alright just cause i had fun with the crafting system and it was multiplayer with some decent fun to it. was mostly just the art style i think, the story was cheesy as hell ;p

As a SEGA fan, I have to argue against the "not a true shining game" statement in a way that no one will really care about:

The Shining series was never just about SRPG gameplay. In fact, the first entry, "Shining in the Darkness," was a dungeon crawler. So was "Shining the Holy Ark" on the Sega Saturn, while another entry on the same system, "Shining Wisdom," was Zelda-like. This also meant that the PS2 releases weren't unusual for the series, because there had already been other action RPGs in its past.

I understand desiring a proper return to form for the SRPG Force titles, though. If anything, the recent action RPGs aren't proper Shining Force games, as the "Force" part of the title usually differentiated the SRPGs from the other types.
