thunder 3 .dat won't go away

thunder3 is (supposed to be?) 1\11\39.dat, but if i swap/delete it, i still get the normal animation. it works fine for every other spell/ability, atleast all the ones i've tried.

according to liek over 9000 different sources, it's the right .dat, not to mention the animation in the .dat is right.

so, any ideas how the game plays an animation from a file that doesn't exist?

If you're trying to get rid of the animation for soloing purposes, wouldn't a gearswap during the cast be just as effective? (maybe equip your staff after starting the cast?)

No. first, that requires you to find exact-ish /waits, which takes time (admittedly, i've already found working ones for all the spells i really care about it for...), it also requires you to change gear BEFORE you finish casting, which is fine for spells like bio, refresh, utsu, etc, but not so much for nukes. and even after that, due to lag, it won't work 100% of the time, which if you're waiting to equip something until right before it casts, then you risk it not being equiped before it finishes, which is no good.

anyway, it doesn't really matter why. point is the animation is still playing, even if i delete the .dat entirely, which works just fine for other spells.

It's because there are two different DAT's for each spell cast. The one you deleted is the actual spell animation, basically what the spell looks like when it lands. Whenever you cast a spell, the game loads both the spell cast animation and the actual spell animation.

In order to get rid of the animation, you'd have to find the spell cast DAT and remove it; which to my knowledge would require you to edit the DAT using VRS to separate that animation from the others. (iirc, there is one dat for several of the spell casting animations)

I'm not sure how to do this/where the DAT is found, I ran into the same problem as I was trying to edit the bubble texture of white magic spell casting. I could never find the DAT with the right textures, and Altana viewer only lists the spell DAT, not the spell cast DAT. =/

(Note: These are the assumptions I made after trying my DAT edit. I could be wrong ^^; )

    Hope this helps

i'm not trying to get rid of the casting animation, just the spell animation. again, it works just fine for everything else (everything i've tried anyway). the problem is that it's still playing the animation for it, even when the .dat isn't there at all, and if i swap it for another it still plays the normal animation.

i've restarted both many times, and just tried restarting my PC, which didn't do anything either. besides just zoning should work.

honestly, i can't imagine what the hell could cause a non-existent .dat to be played o.o

The obvious answer is that the spell animation listed for the thunder series in altanaview are not the actual ones, maybe a mistake was made and 2 sets of thunder animations were made or they updated it and left the old one.

39.dat and 40.dat don't seem to be the ones used ingame.

that seems likely, though the 36~41.dats have the same animation that's used ingame. i really can't imagine why they'd use another copy of them, and leave the old ones in place.

I just checked on my laptop which is a Vista install and the dats that should be there for the entire thunder series are not even there, 36 is but all between it and 42 are absent. So yes they seem to have changed the dat numbers for them.

    well, i went through and tried deleting 10 folders at a time, to find where the .dats went to, and many crashes later finally found 'em x.x;

    goes from rom\172\75.dat, to 79.dat

If you use spell swap what exactly could you swap to negate that binding effect after casting?

Oh give me a break >.> one response in this thread was 9 days, mine was 11.

And uh.. the Merit Point!! Level Up!! things work pretty well, sort of sucks if you do it to Cure IV though.. after I did it and when into dynamis I almost congratulated someone on a merit two minutes in..

Just wondering if there're any others you could swap to? Taking .dats out screws with windower a little and you have to be pretty good at "knowing" when your spell's done to run away from it at the right time.

Also I'm guessing the rank ups work too.
