How far into the game do you get job system? I'm only an hour in, but I'm gonna need to start looking at combos now I guess.

yeah, i completely screwed myself over because of that. i don't remember how many hours it took me to beat the game, but it was well in excess of 100 hours. i have no idea how i managed it.

@Tyrath: you mean in VII, right?

it's a loooong ways in. 20-30 hours or so. the most important thing to be aware of is the requirements for advanced jobs, so you don't waste time on the wrong low-level jobs. there are three tiers, but some of the requirements overlap, so it's good to have two second-tier jobs that both require a shared first-tier job, for example.

did you do the extra content? I didn't even bother lol. it took me longer to simply beat VII than it did to beat all the Dragovian trials and get every accomplishment I could in VIII.

playing IX now and liking it so far.

i didn't do any of the optional stuff in VII that i can remember, as much as i loved the game, i was just too burnt out by all the grinding by the end, i was happy enough with finishing out the story.

with VIII, i did quite a bit but i don't think i ventured too far into the dragovian trials. almost tempted to get back into those now that my interest in DQ has been renewed again, but all my games are packed away right now, far too lazy to dig it out D:

So VII gets better? It's in a box back at home, but I got about an hour in, got bored as shit, heard about the massive grindfest, then never played it before I moved.

Weird, because I thoroughly enjoyed the other DQ games. III brings back good memories.

VII is a great game, but it starts out very slow. the grinding is only at a few parts unless you're careless with your job choices or want to complete the extra content, then it gets pretty bad. still worth it imo.

Man, I think I was right at the end of DQ7 when I stopped playing it for some reason.

Like, I was in disc 2, and I think I was collecting 4 of something to do something else. Maybe opening up the final dungeon or something, idk, it's been like, at LEAST 5 years. Probably more.

my verdict on DQIX so far:

    - fun story and atmosphere. cute little jokes make it worth reading most of the dialogue (lol, my heroine just got an innie).
    - battle system is pretty fun. skill points are nothing new but seem to be well-implemented, and combos are a cool addition to the series.
    - wayyy too much xp and gold from enemies that aren't even all that hard in the first place. definitely feels like DQ Lite. however, that's nothing new - it started in DQVIII and got worse in the DS remakes. I guess they will reach a lot more people this way, but I miss the tough-as-nails grind of the old games. maybe I'm being a bit premature here, but I sincerely doubt I will run into anything near Gracos levels of hair-pulling difficulty.

DQVII was the greatest, and honestly I think the appeal of this one kind of falls short if you don't have other people for multiplayer.

glad to hear someone else say that. you hear a lot of III and IV, but VII is easily my favorite. there's just something special about that game. and it was the last of the hardcore DQs, which I miss a lot.

If you're grinding gold to buy all equipment for the sake of wardrobe completion, you'll likely find that enemies just don't drop enough. I have like 3000 in gear I need to buy up to this point for that purpose and most fights give 20-50g depending on how many enemies pop.

Then again, I did just get my party filled up, so maybe fights will be bigger, too. "Grind" doesn't exactly fit too well on a hand-held, I think, limited battery life on the road 'n all. Besides, I'm sure later levels will have soul-crushing TNLs and I even read up on the ability to reset a 99 job to 1 so you can level it again for more skill points.

So, really, the grind's there if you're a completionist.

And yeah, I found a ROM.

    this x 1000000

I spent many hours, days, fucking weeks in that damn volcano grinding out job levels for my people.

On the flipside though, you only need to use the intermediate jobs to beat Ogordemir(the demon lord); only if you plan on trying to collect every shard in the game and unlock the two secret worlds will you need to start thinking about using advanced jobs and possibly the Hero class.

that's good at least. I do love me some grinding in DQ games. as long as it's not unreasonable... not to harp on VII's job system again *cough*

I can't tell if it's due to the emulator or the game, but my emulator hits a low % (like 12) and my game completely freezes up. I used to know the way around this but I forgot it.

    Anyone have a fix?

mine is pretty damned sluggish, but it doesn't freeze or anything. in my case, i just chalk it up to trying to play on a 4-year old laptop with integrated graphics. if there's some kind of setting that can be tweaked to improve performance though, i'm all ears.

I downloaded some cracked rom but the save is corrupted each time I turn the NDS off. Lost 2 hour already. Its annoying lol when you have to repeat the same opening scene all over again. Anyone has this problem? I tried the MU link earlier and the link already dead
