Seriously, i am sick of people saying that anyone who scrutinizes palin's qualifications as the GOP VP nominee is a sexist. That's just stupid. Being a woman doesn't exempt anyone from taking LSAT for law school, why should this be any different? On the other hand, depicting obama with watermelons and a bucket of fried chicken, or any black stereotype for that matter, is some blatant racism that doesn't require any further elaboration.

I notice you are from Chicago, Illinois. I suspect you also know very little about George Wallace. I don't need wikipedia, children are taught a very skewed version of Alabama History in the 4th grade and again in the 9th grade in Alabama school systems. Given that, and the experiences of family members which can be corroborated by a little reading, I'm probably more prepared to comment on George Wallace Jr. than you would like to think.

You on the other hand, are likely one of those self-righteous moral-high ground yankees who has taken whatever skewed version of history that was presented to you in grade school as the gospel, and act as though the Civil Rights movement only applied to the southeast. What a joke.

tl;dr version: If you don't know anything about me, don't make a judgment on what I'm prepared to comment on. I fail to see any relationship between a Democrat Alabama governer and a Republican cartoon playing off a stereotype that is nationwide. Thus, I am now certain you and Beckwin know very little about George Wallace.

    Your serve.

Melchiah you're a fucking idiot; everyone knows Wallace made a presidential bid based pretty much solely on stoking racial fears and hatred (same for his campaigns for governor).

Wanna talk about experiences of family members? Here's the story my dad told me about the assasination attempt on George Wallace:

The day after someone tried to kill George Wallace, I overheard a conversation between two black guys in my class.

"Hey man, I've got some good news and some bad news"
    "What's the good news?"
    "Someone shot George Wallace."
    "Well what's the bad news?"
    "He didn't die."

Fuck your high horse; I don't give a shit about whatever crybaby defense you have for southern politics of that era.

Fucking idiot must be automatic win around here.

Normally Beckwin, I tend to agree with your stances, but you're misinformed in this instance.

George Wallace adopted the pro-segregation stance after losing an election to a radical candidate. I'm certain that most of this information is available in the wiki article, but for those who don't know:

    1) George Wallace never ran on the R ticket, he was a Democrat and an Independant during his bids for the presidency. Thus, you cannot tie this insult to Obama from a Republican organization to George Wallace in the manner in which you have tried.

    2) George Wallace at one point was backed by the NAACP. Through his own admission, Mr. Wallace used the attitudes of the area and time to win elections, regardless of his personal feelings, just like any politician did and still does. You win offices by playing to your constituents, it just happens that at the time it was still acceptable to say nigger, so that's what he did.

    3) The argument can be made that the infamous stand at the University of Alabama doors was beneficial to the students involved and the integration movement itself. Had Governer Wallace not pulled that stunt, the National Guard would not have gotten involved and there is no telling what kind of riots and other dishonorable behaviors would have occurred during that first attempt at integration. Don't sit here and try to argue both sides of the line either, your idea of the south is a crowd of nigger-hating lynch mobs, and I hate to say it but that's probably close to what would have happened in Tuscaloosa to those two students.

I'm not going to call you a fucking idiot either, that's beneath me. Just know that I don't respect you as much as I did the day before.

    on racism: THIS guy...

    http://www.pixloads.com/files/5911/ohio.jpg

is racist. and although i despair for the future of our species because of people like this, i can laugh at that for some reason... due to his sheer ignorance, and the fact that there's a 99% chance this moron will never leave ohio.

the rather unfunny obama bucks thing is just in poor taste, and not that amusing unless you're living in 1995. if it was actually funny i'd laugh... everything is fair game these days, i wouldn't turn away from a good obama joke or not laugh at it just because i'm voting for him... that shit just isn't funny.

Strom Thurmond was a Democrat as well until the mid 60's, and ran for president under a segregationist democratic spinoff party. Welcome to the concept of "dixiecrat"; I'm glad I can introduce someone with a self-proclaimed information advantage to this. It doesn't matter what party Wallace was, because the point I'm making is about using racial tensions/insecurities to bolster a campaign, which is as you admit exactly what Wallace did. Am I saying John McCain hates black people? No. Am I saying it's as widespread as Wallace's desegregation rhetoric and efforts? No. I'm saying that some elements of the GOP are using racial/ethnic derogatory messages this time around to excite support from the kind of voters I've posted more than a couple videos about.

Wallace was backed by the NAACP before he decided to do whatever it takes to win an election (that latter quality is perhaps a parallel between him and McCain, but that's another topic). And that's quite an interesting spin you put on the Univ of Alabama stunt; I thought pretty much all early desegregation efforts had protection present.

I'm not trying to spin anything, I only said that the argument can be made that the situation could have turned out much worse. I'm perfectly sure that the intention behind the stunt at UA was for the sole purpose of PR, not a thought-out pre-emptive move to head off violence. I make that statement because that wasn't the only place he did that. And no, all the desegregation movements weren't policed. The national guard only showed up because Governor Wallace made it public for weeks that he was going to stand in the doors.

Just because I didn't reference Thurman and the Dixiecrats doesn't mean I'm ignorant. They simply had no bearing on the argument being made.

About that Arab, Muslim thing, even though a lot of people were praising McCain for it... did anybody notice that it implied that Arabs (no doubt confusing it with Muslims) are bad people? There was never any clarification on McCain's part.

yeah. I think both candidates need to acknowledge that, because indirectly there's been too many implications made about arabs and muslims when correcting falsities about Obama's background.

Just a nice, apologetic statement from each, maybe even reference some arab/muslim colleagues, etc.

I don't really blame him. Thanks to the media/politicians/9-11 and the public's perception of Arabs, if McCain were to try to humanize them in midst of a presidential campaign it could only spell disaster.

He'd be risking too much with his core voters to do something like that.

What you're implying is that we treat all Semitics (minus Jews) as terrorists in the US, not quite there yet. There is and has been growing enmity towards Semitic people but not to the point that people confuse terrorist with Arab. They really need to stop doing this:

    "Obama's an Arab!"

    "No, he's not he's a patriotic American!"

    And do this:

    "Obama's an Arab!"

"No, he's a son to an African man and a Anglo-Saxxon American woman, and what you meant to say was that he's a Muslim, which he isn't, he is Christian."

It is also funny that all this is going on when this Clarion organization is distributing these videos to incite hatred towards Muslims while the rumor is going around that Obama is a Muslim, and that this is also going on when a Jewish man who was decrying the abuses committed against Arabs near the settlements and inside of Israel (Arabs were attacked in Israel for crossing into a largely Jewish neighborhood), was threatened with death by Anti-Arab groups, and this is also going on when Jewish settlers are harassing Arabs daily and trowing rocks at them while the Jewish police goads them. I'm having a hard time seeing who the "good guys" are.

It's sad, but I'm willing to bet that at least 85% of the u.s. population thinks "arab" and "muslim" mean the same thing. Issuing an apologetic statement would probably negatively affect whoever does it.

I hardly expect Obama or McCain to be conscious of the damage they do to others with their political garbage, but i'm not the kind of person to be satisfied with "at least".

What kind of billboard sized signs do you bring to your presidential rallies?

It's too bad that Palin is trying really hard to undermine everything McCain has done, by inciting racial attention and falsely claiming that obama is a terrorist, when obama's life experience is the epitome of American dream in that he is an accomplished minority raised by a single mom and grandparents on food stamps. palin, do all of us a favor, lay off that political hate speech of yours.

The point is that his answer was pretty ignorant/racist, really has nothing to do with obama. Replace arab with any other race in that scenario, mccain would have been plastered as a racist and his campaign would have been over.
