Nintendo is usually ahead of it's time. While in that era, CDs gave better sound quality and storage, the cartridge had better load times and saving was possible without mem cards.

Now today everything is going back to cartridges. Not only are they catching up in storage (see SSDs) they provide everything the CD has and more.

Nintendo had a good idea. The loading time of the first Playstation games were downright aweful.


What broke their neck tho is that the normal consumer was much too impressed by prerendered movies at that time.

I'd attribute at least a little of it to the reluctance of developers to try to put large games on a cartridge.

This was what I disliked. If you wanted to get rid of my game i had to get rid of my save file too. And they were all limited to 3 saves.
