Reading this thread gives me the impression many of you are not old enough to have been to a proper arcade back when there could be such a thing as a proper arcade. If you were, you'd remember pinball:

or at least think of games with real quarter-munching addictiveness:

The lack of shmups on here makes me very sad.

Where's the love for 1942, Raiden, Gradius, R-Type, DoDonPachi, Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga?

Did Ikaruga even have an arcade release? I've never seen a Radiant Silvergun or DoDonPachi machine either. I think the most recent shmups that I've seen in any arcades in the northeast were the Gunbird games >_<

All three were first released in the arcade, then later ported to consoles.

Ikaruga wasn't released in America until the GCN port, which was after arcades here had already basically died. Radiant Silvergun and DoDonPachi never had American releases period, so you're unlikely to see actual machines unless you visit Japan.

Such an awesome game. I was visiting some family and saw this game in a mall arcade there one day. Played it for a good while that day. It had some sort of passcode for player profiles or something. Locals kept coming up and challenging me and puttin in their code. I think I ended up making them mad, lol. The game didn't even let you move your view vertically, and was still so great.

The next time I was in the area the game was gone . If I have the money and find one available to buy somewhere, I want to buy it.

I love the original Time Crisis. I would play it just about every day on my lunch break & it never got old. If the arcade hadn't changed spaces at the mall & messed up the game while moving it, I know I would've got a perfect game.

Also most of the arcade games from the late 80s were great even though I can't remember their names...

I always liked playing the Time Cop games too. I do recall one funny instance where an acquaintance of mine, who washed out of Basic Training just before graduation, got his ass handed to him by me in a Time Crisis 3 game. This is a guy who has actually handled firearms, including pistols, and boasted that he was "one point" shy of getting a marksman designation during basic. Proof that Video Games > Real Life lol

Even though I was terrible at them, I liked played SHUMPS like 1942 and Raiden.
