    Powell endorses Obama

    http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/10/...a/19powell.php
WASHINGTON: Colin Powell, who was secretary of state in the Bush administration, broke with his party Sunday to offer a stunning and powerfully worded endorsement to Senator Barack Obama's presidential candidacy.

It's really too bad Powell won't be involved in the presidency, he's probably the only person I believe would be better than Biden. Then again, 2 black guys running... yeah.

Oh well, hope he's willing to be secretary of defense.

Last time I checked, Powell got punk'd into backing the "bullet-proof" evidence of WMDs/etc in Iraq as a justification for war. He's a figurehead at this point. Who cares.

The whole world got 'punk'd' into it. If you include Powell into the fold you might as well include all of Congress.

I actually have mixed feelings about this.

Colin Powell mattered in 2000, not now to really be honest. If its an endorsement to shore up the "black vote" i think Obama already has that done. The undecided? Theyre already moving in his direction.

Though it might end up making a few of those undecided leaners more confidant in their choice now. In the end though, he really just ends up being just another celebrity endorsement for Obama, lost in the mix.

I dont see Powell taking a cabinet position either. Secretary of Defense is *kind of* a step down from Sec of State. Just like i doubt Romney will be Sec of Treasury under a McCain administration, even though he would be perfect, its kind of a step down from being a Governor. Though yes his speech was pretty good.

What has me curious, is that as ready to paint the McCain campaign as hand in hand with Bush as the Obama camp seems to be, why they're welcoming a former prominent Bush cabinet member into the mix so happily I just don't get. His distaste for the Iraq war? Is that even still a bigtime issue in these last 16 days? And Obama could just have easily been "oh cool, thanks for the nod. moving on" but theyre excited about it for reasons I guess i just can't see.

Powell was more or less forced out of Bush's cabinet by Rumsfeld and Cheney, not a secret. They're counting on him being someone who ran against the more hawkish elements of Bush's White House to bring in more support from undecided voters. It's another move in a campaign that paints itself as forever closing the book on Bush-style executive leadership.

That's not accurate. While we were indeed presented faulty intelligence, there was plenty of dissent at the time. Subsequent reporting has proven that the intelligence was framed.

It's like people in the administration saying "we went with the intelligence we had." That's just dishonest.

Months later, news articles reported that Powell had spent several days at CIA headquarters in Langley, Va., looking over the intelligence, and that he put only the strongest evidence in his briefing, tossing out many claims—for instance, the business about uranium-shopping in Niger—that he considered flimsy, if not fraudulent.

He was part of the mobilization for war. Selectively choosing "evidence" and disinformation.

But he's also gone on record saying he, himself, was 'misled'. So I think it's a matter of emphasis to say HE got punk'd since it was HIS testimony that really drove the mobilization for war home.

From what I can tell, this is most important as an opportunity to have someone give a good speech.

This thread is about the best evidence I've ever seen of how little the average American actually knows about its own government and the people running it.

Which of us are representing the average though? Everyone who posted in the thread, or just everyone who tried to argue in it?
