Not a Jordan fan, so I will say Kobe isnt and never will be the "next Jordan" He might have been a couple years ago, but he has a shitty personality. Jordan was the face of the NBA, Kobe will never be that, and it tears Lakers fans up that Lebron might will be that person. In the end, will people remember Championships or The Face?

BTW, who was that last player to win the MVP and win the Championship? I wonder if it was someone that rapes people, doesnt shake hands after losing, cheats on his wife, gambles, does drugs, etc...

Duncan face (dunk'-uhn fas) noun. A look of incredulous, googly-eyed mock surprise that is directed at a referee by a player any (and every) time a call does not go that player's way. Note that the Duncan face can be enhanced by raising the hands in an "I didn't do it!" gesture and should be followed up with a steely-eyed glare.

Usage example: On to my frustration: The Spurs are huge babies. This applies to Popovich, Duncan, and seemingly every other player on the court. Duncan has his Duncan Face everytime he doesn't get a call. [By "Isaac," via TrueHoop.]

Word history: It's impossible to pinpoint exactly when this term was invented, but it's been popular for at least the last three or four seasons, during which time the Duncan face has become a parody of itself. I mean, how can the officials possibly take Duncan -- or any player who utilizes the Duncan face -- seriously anymore? If I was an NBA referee, I would make one call or non-call against a player for each time he used the Duncan face. (This could quite possibly be the reason I am not currently employed as a referee.)

Great Duncan faces throughout history: In addition to the standard or "classic" Duncan face shown above, there are several other Duncan faces that can be used when the situation warrants it:


1. The "Dear God, it hurts!" face. Because that foul could have killed me, man!

The Spurs have been out of the playoff picture for more than a month, so roadside vendors of NBA-related T-shirts and pennants had to get creative to attract San Antonians.

A stand at the corner of San Pedro and Oblate offered T-shirts with Spurs logos and Nos. 21, 20 and 9 last weekend, but the shirts hanging up front to catch the eyes of motorists relied on an emotion more certain to compel sales.

“Lakers Suck” was the theme of the day.

In silver and black lettering, of course.

Boston has won 17 NBA titles, more than any franchise. But the Lakers, not the Celtics, are the Yankees of basketball, despised for their very success.

The Lakers will be making their 30th appearance in the Finals, beginning with Thursday's Game 1, in search of the franchise's 15th championship.

Count on most of the league's fans that don't count purple and gold among their favorite colors to be rooting for the Magic.

Lakers Hatred is an extension of fan jealousy, and it makes for great rivalries. “Lakers Suck” T-shirts would have sold briskly in Boston during the 1980s had it not been a time of more sensitive restraint. Then, “Beat L.A.” shirts ruled the day, and the chant would begin at the Boston Garden an hour before tip-off of the three Lakers-Celtics Finals of the Larry Bird-Magic Johnson era.

A large measure of modern-day Lakers Hatred derives from outright jealousy that Kobe Bryant is the game's most skilled closer, turning even great defenders into helpless witnesses.

That he takes such obvious delight in his own exploits fuels the antipathy.

Bryant has spent the bulk of his career trying to be Michael Jordan. He has matched Jordan's ability to make the most difficult shots when they matter most, but he hasn't replicated His Airness' universal appeal. This is because he can't stop himself from falling into the playground ethos demanding that bravado accompany every on-court success.

Bryant is the antithesis of Tim Duncan, whose stoicism makes him the perfect Spur but the bogeyman of TV ratings.

Jordan talked trash, too, but with a subtlety that defied detection. And he eschewed histrionics. When he made his sixth 3-pointer of the first half in Game 1 of the 1992 Finals en route to a 33-point victory over the Trail Blazers, he shrugged his shoulders and gave the world a look that seemed to say, “I'm sorry ... I don't even believe it myself.”

Bryant would have bobbed his head in exaggerated affirmation of his own greatness.

That the NBA needs the Lakers to succeed was underscored during their Western Conference finals matchup with the Nuggets. Never had ABC had higher ratings for a conference finals game than it garnered from its Game 3 telecast on May 23. Never had a cable broadcast of an NBA series drawn such high ratings as it did for ESPN.

That many of the series viewers tuned in hoping to watch the Nuggets wipe the smirk from Bryant's face is a truth ABC and ESPN demographers understand.

Now the Lakers face the Magic in an NBA Finals commissioner David Stern will pretend to love just as much as he would have enjoyed Lakers vs. Cavs and Kobe vs. LeBron.

Expect to hear Stern tell us that Kobe vs. Dwight Howard is equally compelling.

Don't believe him for even a fraction of a second.

The good news for Stern: Lakers vs. Magic is ironclad, prima facie evidence the league doesn't manipulate the Finals matchups.

Magic players: PG Nelson will play in NBA finals

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP)—Orlando Magic players say Jameer Nelson(notes) will play in the NBA finals, even though the All-Star point guard and his coach remain publicly pessimistic.

Nelson participated in a full team practice Tuesday for the first time since tearing the labrum in his right shoulder Feb. 2. While Nelson and coach Stan Van Gundy still said the point guard’s status won’t be determined until game day, players said Nelson looked “terrific” and expect him to be on the court against the Los Angeles Lakers.

“I expect to see him out there at some point in the series,” backup point guard Anthony Johnson(notes) said.

Nelson had what was then called season-ending surgery Feb. 19. Nelson’s rehabilitation was supposed to take at least another two months.

Game 1 of the finals is Thursday night in Los Angeles, and healed or not, Nelson wants to play.

“I’m not saying I’m any tougher or stronger than anybody, but I’ve been known to do some amazing things sometimes,” Nelson said Tuesday, again lobbying for playing time.

Magic general manager Otis Smith had repeatedly said Nelson will not play again this season. But he recanted his comments Monday and said a quicker recovery and the chance of winning a championship has forced him to at least take a look at Nelson

“It’s still no in my mind,” Smith said. “There’s a very smidgen of a chance he can play.”

That “smidgen” seems to be growing.

Nelson has been playing full-court games and practicing in non-contact drills for the last two weeks. Tuesday, he participated in every drill.

Players said Nelson wasn’t in his All-Star form, but even not completely healthy, he was better than most NBA point guards.

“He was terrific,” Magic forward Mickael Pietrus(notes) said. “Hopefully, he will play and can help us win.”

Starting point guard Rafer Alston(notes) expressed similar optimism.

“I was going to try to run him ragged out there, but I didn’t want to cross him over,” Alston said. “He did cross me over a couple times.”

The Lakers are preparing as if Nelson will play—and for good reason.

Orlando was 2-0 against Los Angeles this season. Nelson was Orlando’s leading scorer in both those games, averaging 27.5 points.

And with the Lakers’ troubles guarding point guards in the postseason, they’re not taking any chances.

“He’s a terrific player. He’s really come on a lot in the last year as a player,” Lakers coach Phil Jackson. “Someone’s got to play that position and we have to match whatever happens there. He has the speed and intelligence to play that position very well for that team.”

Nelson has been trying to convince the Magic for a chance at playing since the playoffs began, with each round the team advances the idea—and the talk— of him returning growing.

For the Lakers, Nelson is just one more offensive weapon they have to worry about.

“They add another scorer,” Los Angeles’ Kobe Bryant(notes) said. “They have a team full of them, but he is another player you’re going to have to deal with on defense.”

The Magic’s title hopes seemingly took a major hit after Nelson was injured. A trade-deadline deal that brought Alston from Houston largely saved the Magic’s season, allowing the rotation to remain the same and Johnson to continue to provide solid play as Alston’s backup.

The Magic are hoping Nelson can only add to that success.

Van Gundy, perhaps trying to keep his coaching strategy a secret, again expressed doubt Tuesday whether Nelson could seriously return for the finals. But he also said that even if Nelson doesn’t play in Game 1, he could play later in the series.

“He was OK,” Van Gundy said, shrugging his shoulders. “We’ll have to wait until and see.”
