No suspension for Smith in feud with Cuban


DENVER (AP)—The NBA said Thursday that Denver Nuggets guard J.R. Smith won’t be suspended for throwing an elbow that angered Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban.

The excitable owner might still face punishment for going onto the court to voice his displeasure with Smith.

NBA spokesman Tim Frank told The Associated Press on Thursday that Smith has been cleared of any wrongdoing and “Cuban is still being reviewed.”

Cuban took offense when Smith threw an elbow that barely missed Mavericks forward Antoine Wright late in the first half of Dallas’ game at the Pepsi Center on Tuesday night.

As the teams walked off for halftime, Cuban came onto the court and hollered at Smith, which in turn angered Nuggets coach George Karl.

Cuban said Wright could have been severely injured and that he was going to ask the league to suspend Smith.

Karl was OK with Cuban’s stance but took exception to him calling out a player from an opposing team.

“Stay away from my players, stay off the court, don’t get involved,” Karl told reporters at practice the day after the incident. “If you want to interact, interact with the league office and interact with your own players, but don’t mess with my players. There’s no room for it.

“If this was a normal fan, he would have been banned from the building and maybe not ever let back in the game,” Karl said. “When the game starts, he is a fan. After the game, he’s an owner, but during the game, he’s a fan.”


The Mavs are starting to fall apart like the Cowboys.

I have always loved Karl, but he is a fucking idiot. If I paid an employee millions of dollars to perform and someone tried to stop him from performing, I'd be fucking livid. I still have to pay him regardless if he's playing or sitting on the sideline with a broken jaw. The "he's a fan when the game starts" is bullshit. Cuban is an employer and your player tried to stop him from working.

The media keeps talking about the Lakers/Celtics/Cavs, but quietly the Magic (record-wise), is right there with those 3.

I'm suprised Nelson is doing well. When he came into the league with West I didn't think he was much of a shooter at all, let alone becoming one. The Magic have a really young team and is only going to get better if they can keep it together.

Man, this season is awesome. Orlando, Cleveland, LA, and Boston.. all 30 wins and less than 10 losses. I think that's the first time that something like that has ever happened. The East sure is top heavy. I still think the West is better as a whole though.

Game was awesome but damn the NBA for scheduling this when 24 is on, now I have to torrent 24.

I have to say the West has been a major disappointment recently but this is January basketball so there's still time.

didnt get to see much of my game tonight except the last 5 mins of it since i was at work but i heard the cavs blazers game got reffed to fucking shit considering oden and our PG got fouled out yeah.... PG.... oden i can understand but jesus fuck our point guard :<

Oden's really bad when it comes to fouling out, lol. How was his statline tonight? I notice he does well against small, skinnier "Centers", but when it comes to a superstar center.. a bigger guy, he really struggles.

Well he didn't play a superstar or a bigger guy tonight. He did ok for the minutes he played I guess. He got into foul trouble in the 3rd.

He was double teamed a good amount of times he touched the balls, which doesn't make sense. It's not like he is some monster down in the post able to score every time.

heard he got at least 3 phantom calls that either shouldnt have been called or been on someone else like every other rookie hes getting rookie calls, bayless got fouled out because of ticky tacky fouls its just him learning how to defend without fouling it might be awhile but im giving him the time he will be a god damn beast when its all done and said for.
