A 19-year-old basketball player from Queens was fatally stabbed with a broken-off table leg today after a fight broke out during a basketball tournament, the police said.

The player, Lloyd Newton, was stabbed in the back with a leg from the scorer's table at the championship game of a Y.M.C.A.-sponsored tournament at the Niagara Falls Boys and Girls Club, the police in Niagara Falls said.

"An argument ensued about the score," Capt. Louis Curcione said, adding that one of the teams "thought they were getting gypped."

"A fight broke out between the players and about 40 fans in the stands," he said. "In the course of the fight, one person was stabbed in the back."

Mr. Newton was taken to the Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Brian C. Young, 16, of Niagara Falls, has been charged with second-degree murder. He was being held at the Niagara Falls jail pending his arraignment in city court today.

Alston And Fisher Suspended For Game 3

Rafer Alston of the Orlando Magic and Derek Fisher of the Los Angeles Lakers have each been suspended one game without pay for their roles in separate incidents last night, NBA Executive Vice President, Basketball Operations Stu Jackson announced on Thursday.

Alston has been suspended for swinging and making contact with the head of Eddie House of the Boston Celtics with 48.6 seconds remaining in the third period of the Magic’s 112-94 loss to the Celtics in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals last night at TD Banknorth Garden.

Fisher has been suspended for striking Houston’s Luis Scola with his shoulder and head with 13.2 seconds remaining in the third period of the Lakers’ 111-98 win last night over the visiting Houston Rockets in Game 2 of the Western Conference Semifinals at STAPLES Center. Fisher received a Flagrant Foul Penalty Two and was ejected from the game at the time of the play.

Jackson also announced that the Lakers’ Kobe Bryant has been assessed a Flagrant Foul Penalty One for elbowing Houston’s Ron Artest in the chest area with 6:57 remaining in the fourth period of last night’s game.

Alston will serve his suspension on Friday when the Magic hosts the Celtics at Amway Arena. Fisher also will serve his suspension on Friday when the Lakers visit the Rockets at Toyota Center.

Everyone bitched and moaned last year that they weren't at full strength because Bynum wasn't around. Hell, I'm watching Hockey and I live in Alabama. Yes, I know we have a Georgia team and a Florida team, but I don't think they should even exist. The Fisher foul was intentional. No doubt there. The Kobe elbow is questionable. Was it intentional? I don't know any better than you do. Get over it though, Artest and Kobe always play physical. It was subject to opinion, refs called it how they wanted to. Go cry to them.

With this logic, it is impossible for anything intentional to be below the head. It doesn't matter where the elbow lands - it has no bearing on whether it was intentional. As Artest said - he loves playing with kobe and it's always physical - the way he likes it. But when you start going over the line and throwing blatant elbows, Kobe better not expect ron artest to just take it. I'm seriously in absolute awe how you can look at that video and not find that elbow intentional. Don't even drag the referees into either, they called the foul on artest lol. The league would not have deemed that a flagrant 1 after review if it were not clearly intentional.

Most fans just like complaining about fouls. It happens every game. You can imagine what happens where there are flagrant fouls involved. Scola is pretty notorious for flopping (like essentially every non-Yao foreign player in the NBA) and I think he acted a bit on Fisher's tackle, though it still warrants the 1 game for premeditation. Artest does not act though. He prides himself on being tough and does not exaggerate. Problem is he can single handedly kill HOU with outbursts like the one in the 4th yesterday...

Also, the toughest player on the Rockets is Chuck Hayes, not Ron Artest. Just no one talks about him. Everytime Bynum or Gasol sees him come in the game they immediately try to post 1v1 on him to exploit his size and get nowhere. By the time they figure out you can't post 1v1 against him they've already blown 3-4 possessions.
