So the tards might be a little interested:

Right guys, figured it out, thanks to Griff's guides and a bit of tweaking on my previous unrepeatable Ghost Wolf tame.

This will allow you to tame pets that you want, with appearance buffs that you like. If a mob has a non-timed appearance-effecting buff on it, and you tame it with this method, it should keep the buff.

* Tameable mobs whose buffs dissipate on death will be for show only, as the buff will clear on pet death (and player death).

* When used on pets that have a buff that persists after death (The Lone Hunter, Oil-Stained Wolf etc), the buff WILL REMAIN after player death, so the pets are quite useable. This is an alternative way to quickly tame pets with appearance buffs without the hassle of timers.

Step 1: Find a pet with a buff you like.
Step 2: Trigger the pet's appearance change, if necessary.
Step 3: Tame Beast, and spam the following macro as the tame completes: /script PetAbandon()
Step 4: If it went well, the pet will be gone, but you will "already have an active summon" when you attempt to retame another. Relog, and your new shiny pet will be there.
Step 5: NEVER let it die >.> Also, do NOT die, yourself, while the pet is out. I have confirmed that this will also wipe the pet's buffs. (This step applies only to mobs who lose their appearance upon death while in the wild)

The mechanics of this: It makes the pet despawn as it becomes a pet, avoiding the "wiping the buffs" event. Be aware that pets tamed in this fashion take a relog to show, and will be set to Aggressive by default; you will also need to manually pull their abilities onto the Pet Bar from the Spellbook. Also keep in mind that this pet will (in the manner of Garwal, the Oil-Stained Wolf etc) appear as a normal tamed version of that mob (white wolf if ghost wolf, etc) on the log-in and pet screens.

^Nice find. Will have to try this for my huntard. Got my warlock to 80, put him on hold for a while. Dusted off my old 37 pally, got her to 40 and a shit load of upgrades in one sitting. Fast queues are the shit! (compared to waiting on my hunter or lock at least.)

So my hunter is currently 79, hoping to get him to 80 tonite b4 the midnight release. I had been camping loque'nahak for an hour here and there for a few days with npc scan and logged out at one of the spawn points. I log in at my friends house (no addon) and boom there he was and I got him I also camped arcturis (spirit bear) for a few nights here and there and logged out at its spawn point, logged in today and boom there he was as well....I feel so lucky :D my friend hates me lol so far these past few months I got 2 x headless horseman, 2 x jeweled fishing pole, turtle mount, and 2 x spirit beasts. A while ago I even got the hyacinth macaw drop randomly while killing some bloodsails on my hunter. I was never this lucky on ffxi hah.

While getting mining to 450 yesterday king krush popped in front of me. I tagged it and started to tame, some faggot popped in and killed it while i was taming, then logged out. Hope he didn't get the achieve meta cause I did.

Not on purpose tho. When I was told to "dip" the boss in the lava/beam of light. I did. But as I did that, my (out of date) DBM went crazy so I panicked and sat still trying to decipher the "corrupted" DBM messages while the boss was still in the lava/beam. A few seconds later everyone died haha. Still now I know what to do so when I go back in there tonight for my daily random I won't be as bad
