4 edition - Help me out, here.

I haven't picked up any D&D books since 3.5, and I'm curious what impression people have of 4th edition before I buy all three core books. I'm told it plays faster, but is this really the case? It is easier to multiclass, and are there any major changes to classes / races where you went "uh, what?"

    Do tell.

A lot of "Uh, what?" for everything.

Character creation goes by faster, but gameplay/combat does not.

Multiclassing is simplified. 3.5 probably has the better system, but 4e's isn't bad.

It's pretty cool, but the core books felt very empty. A lot of people think it feels like a MMO.

Thank you for the feedback. I think I'll peruse a little more before dropping a chunk of change on three new books when there are systems that work pretty well for me now.

Mega-old bump but is relevant to this topic: I'm slightly perplexed by multiclass feats, is it something you can do at Lv1 in place of a normal class feat or are they only available at 11 as per WotC? The PHB doesn't explicitly forbid them at Lv1 and a number of macro character sheets give you the option to take a multiclass feat at Lv1, but a few of them don't, so I've got mixed signals...

You don't have to wait until level 11. In fact, I'm not sure where you're even getting the level 11 bit from. You take the class-specific feat first, whenever you want, (like Student of the Sword for Fighter MC) and then you can take the Acolyte/Novice/Adept Power feats at or after their respective levels to get some powers from the class you multiclassed into.

The only multiclassing bit that "requires" level 11 is Paragon Multiclassing, which requires all three of the power exchange feats and replaces a traditional Paragon Path with powers taken from your multiclass.

Yeah, the paragon exchange is what I was talking about. I just wasn't sure if that was multiclassing period or if that was a separate multiclass thing. Thanks for clarifying

Try to get your DM to adopt better multiclass feats. What was given in the book is shit.

Er, the multiclass system in 3/3.5 was kind of obtuse in my experience, left characters badly crippled since you had to level each class independently of its neighbor...this seems much more user-friendly.

Or do you just mean the feat offerings themselves in the PHB? PHB 2 and Adventurer's Compendium have some extra options for each class that give some good versatility depending on what you want to do with the character.

didn't buy 4e, read copies of all the core books... I can safely say there isn't a lot to miss out on. I feel like in the rush to make a game that didn't have polymorph or wish problems, they fixed things that weren't broken. Oh well. 3.5 it is for me.

I got a group of friends and about every other week we meet up for a day of DnD 2.5 (Best edition imo). Our DM bought the books and we all passed them around as we were playing.

Simply put: I was not impressed at all with it. 3.5 seems way better than the current edition they put it. As was stated by BRP, feels more like MMO .

We live in holes rly. jk >.> Me and my D&D friends are just a bunch of stoners. A lot of people don't expect us to be hardcore D&D but we are. We're a sneaky bunch. ;o
