For those pro-life pro-stem cell research people out there, I've got a question for you. Should abortion be allowed in cases where serious birth defects(autism, harlequin ichthyosis, etc.) are detected early in the pregnancy?

Alright. I can agree with that. I guess it comes down to whether more ills are done by legalizing or banning abortion/stem cell research (I do hold the same views, more or less, as Beckwin stated earlier, both are destroying unwanted embryos so the same issues apply to both). My opinion is, and ignoring the benefits of stem cell research for the time being, it's better to risk the social/psychological damage of abortion for some than limit the freedoms of all. When you do take into consideration the benefits of stem cell research on discarded embryos, that just solidifies my viewpoint.
Once we find the gene that makes people gay I would totally support aborting all the potential fags.
pohibaba, as I assume from your sig you are a libertarian, I find it very surprising that you'd be anti-abortion. How do you reconcile that?

I'm lazy so I'll just link you to the thread where I already debated this.
From what I can see, you argued that it was moral to protect life, whether born or unborn, am I correct in condensing this properly?
But, according to you, why is human life worth protecting? What makes it immoral to kill a living human being?
(In case anyone's wondering, I've been thinking about this very question myself alot recently, I guess this is just a convenient chance to hear what some other people think)
Pro-choice, Pro-embryonic stem-cell.
This is coming from someone who's been through a botched abortion and a follow up to rectify the fuck up. It was a mistake that should have been carried to term, but we were both young and scared. Judge me all you want, but I still think women should have the right to choose, for many reasons.
Hi everyone, long time lurker, first time poster. Anyways, for those who are opposed to legalized abortions with the exception of rape, how to do you legitimize someone's claim claim of rape to qualify for an abortion? To me it seems like anyone who would want an abortion would just claim rape no matter their circumstances.
Pro-Choice/pro-stem cell btw
I would say nobody has any right to take anyone else's fate into their own hands. The exception to this is that the life of a fetus is obviously in its mother's hands, because there is no possibility, with current technology, that it can be transferred to another caretaker before it is born. Once that possibility exists, then abortion can be outlawed.
As far as zygotes or blastocysts, they don't really count until they're implanted in the lining of a uterus. After all, sometimes natural blastocysts don't implant and are lost through menstruation. A woman isn't even pregnant until the blastocyst is implanted, so you can't really compare the use of a loose blastocyst for research to an abortion.
