Absentee ballots are only counted if they would make a difference in the voting. So if there were 50,000 absentee ballots but McCain had a 100,000 vote lead over Obama then they wouldn't take the time to count them since it wouldn't matter at all. Or at least this is what I believe is correct. It's not like you're vote didn't count... it just didn't matter. I don't think they have the time/manpower to count everything and have results in quickly so they prioritize what gets counted first.
