Absentee simply means you werent in person to cast your vote. So you mail it in. Why on Earth would you think that they dont count unless the election is close?

Because in landslide states or states that they know has a high majority of going one way, absentee ballots generally are overlooked/thrown out.

It did come off a bit more authoritative than intended, but as journalism major, this has been a echo I've heard between my professors in their research and experience with the electoral process. It's also been said by a few of the other professors in poli sci and like majors at my university.

I meant for it to be more as reason why the absentee ballots would not be counted when Valisk said why wouldn't they be.

Whether or not this absolutely true or not, I have not done the research, but it has been said by a lot of the professors in my college.

Absentee ballots are only counted if they would make a difference in the voting. So if there were 50,000 absentee ballots but McCain had a 100,000 vote lead over Obama then they wouldn't take the time to count them since it wouldn't matter at all. Or at least this is what I believe is correct. It's not like you're vote didn't count... it just didn't matter. I don't think they have the time/manpower to count everything and have results in quickly so they prioritize what gets counted first.

It seems to me like a lot of Obama supporters (not the majority) think that McCain will destroy the country if elected. I also realize that in reality most people will do nothing except bitch about it whenever the President makes a mistake, but it's interesting to see what people say they will do.

Yeah that is true (10 days mainly for overseas military). Every vote must be counted but I highly doubt every vote is. I bet absentee votes aren't counted until the end of the 10 day deferral and probably aren't counted very accurately if a winner is clear.

When I voted absentee in Virginia in 2000 they straight up told me at the Voter's Commission office that my ballot wouldn't be counted unless the election was close. I have no idea if that was actually true but I saw no reason for them to lie about it.

Yeah it happens on both sides, and on both its fringe people more than anything. No reason to suggest more than a couple people on these boards (if that - probably no one here) would actually do anything significantly different if their pick isn't elected regardless of who wins. I'd expect protests and editorials and just plain out bitching but thats normal and like I said, on both sides.

I just think it's irresponsible to tell people that absentee ballots aren't counted the same as a regular ballot based simply on rumor or conjecture. According to the law, every ballot is equal and every ballot is required to be counted. I think that's the message that should people should be spreading.
