Obama beat one of the most powerful political machines in this country in the primaries, raised more money than anybody before him, has the biggest groundgame/GOTV system ever, has put traditional republican states in play, not to mention forcing McCain to destroy his image as a 'maverick' with his antics to try and win. There are plenty of legitimate reasons to think Obama ran a poor campaign. One would be to define all negative campaigns as poor. Both major campaigns are guilty of this, ergo both campaigns are poor.
