    Dota is serious business!

So after a very very long warcraft III break and never having played Dota even though it was semi popular when i quit. I come back to find 95% of custom maps created are DOTA.......... Now here's the lawlness about this situation. I've never played dota and that's the only thing anyone plays. So when I join a dota game (more than half are titled DOTA *insert some random abbrvs* PROS ONRY) they see me downloading and it's instant kick. I figured it was just serious business dota players but it happened every single dota game i joined after trying for 20minutes.

So in all honesty I would like to know exactly what dota is. I'm pretty sure it's some fucked stupid map that's retarded and everyone whores it cause it's stupid like most popular maps (except enfos way back when)

edit: ok it's just getting ridiculous now. trying to burn some time while camping something on FFXI and as soon as I join before my name even loads I get kicked for downloading lol. Is it really that serious?

Dota is like, almost the main fucking SPORT of some of those euro countries out in the backwoods. There are music vids about it and its practically a small industry. Basically from what I understand its a heavily modded W3 that uses complicated tactical rules and powers, using units of... hero classes sort of? Someone might be able to answer better than me, but people get as pumped over Dota as soccer.

And people get pretty ridiculous about soccer.

Yea I know what you mean. Starcraft has become extremely hyped in korea. It's like the US version of football. Practically a sport over there, winning trophies and shit and what not.

The official download site is getdota.com. There are also some AI maps if you want to learn some heroes before you play against people.

DotA = Defense of the Ancients
it's...a relatively steep learning curve, and obviously if you're downloading it you have no idea what the fuck you're doing, which is definitely annoying if you're a good player

basically there's two ancients, the world tree and the frozen throne (sentinel and scourge respectively), there's 3 lanes that go from SW to NE and meet in the middle, each side spawns identical numbers of units with relatively identical stats that automatically follow their preset lane, there are also 2 towers per lane as well as 3 in each base where the lane meets the base

your basic goal is to grab a hero and kill the other team, of course there's a shitton more to getting items and skill setups and strategies as well as all kinds of odd things like the sidepaths, the 'secret' shop, the recipes etc...

to not be a noob, basically learn how the recipe system works, there are 4 shops that have nothing but recipes that list the stats of the items, even though they're only like 1000gold they don't actually give you the stats that they list, you have to buy the rest of the components of that particular item before it'll make the item with the stats listed

it's simple once you get to know everything, but if you're just starting it's a bit daunting at first because everyone will yell at you, as long as you're not a total retard (run away when your health is low) you'll be mediocre.

It doesn't sound exciting enough that 95% of the games people play are dota. What's so special about it?

Nothing. It's shitty. And yes, people take it WAY too seriously. Don't waste your time and start up your own custom games with fun maps.

I used to play it real competitively back in the day, it's fun in an ADD RPG sense...you basically start off with a level 1, you race to 25 and beat the game or get game over then start over, not to mention there's a bunch of different classes basically.

Drow Ranger <3, been the best char since DotA AS Beta .95, even in DotA DF drow was a beast. But it's basically just a massive killing fest and showing off how much you know about the characters and their skill sets and how people are likely to play them; casting silence on people just before they're about to do super huge xyz combo type thing, it's definitely a different kind of 'fun'.

Mortred is probably the only character I hate going against. She is fucking broken no matter what. Game is relatively well balanced beside this.

Anyway, dota is fun occasionally, but it take a while to get used. You will need to try every heroes to understand what they can do, and there is like 40. Knowing what item are the best, and how to efficiently fight people can take a while too. If you can endure the first few painful game.

lol, PA is only broken if you let her farm. And in terms of how ridiculous carries can get she's not that bad. A permabash carry will always beat out a crit carry.

oh, and there's like 90 heroes total.

    there's 94 heroes.

also, pa is super imba late game for reals, somewhat hard to start out with sometimes especially if you come up against a real good harasser/denier, but get a solo lane with another melee who isn't very good and it's gg.

It depends on what type of game you're playing. If it's -APEM, then yeah, most agility heroes are broken because they get stacked too quickly. If you're playing a non-EM game then it really depends on the team set up. There are plenty of games where you can jungle and farm a lane freely because the other team isn't smart enough to gank someone that's been farming a lot. It's crucial that if you see a hero like Mortred, Meepo, Faceless Void, etc. you keep tabs on their items and how well they've been farming. I've carried and won so many games as Meepo against fairly decent players just by abusing his imba creeping abilities. There's pretty much nothing you can do against a stacked Meepo.

I only counted one side..forgot to do x2 lol

PA is fucking annoying, because her "invisibility". I dont know how many time I missed her in a crowd and got rapped before I could react. I notice the same thing when I play her...many time, you kill someone without ever getting hit back.

And really, she doesn't really many items to drop 1k dmg critical. With teleport, 150dmg dagger and slow, she always destroy everything after level 11-12 if you happens to meet her solo (unless you have a good disable). Of course, she isn't invincible, but I still think she is the easiest/strongest heroes. I think they should drop her x4 crit to x3 or something, or lower the rate a bit.

It's crucial that if you see a hero like Mortred, Meepo,
But meepo at least is hard to control. Dropping the net and microing your 4 guys isn't always easy (it's easy to lose one if you're not careful). They do get powerful, but unlike PA, you have to do well early and get your item asap.

looks like i've created a dota nerd fest thread. anyway thanks for the input i've already played it a few times. it was somewhat fun but after the 2nd-3rd game i don't see how anyone could continue playing it regardless. And yes, literally 95% of the custom maps created are dota. 3% enfos 2% random

I used to play this at a local internet cafe on LAN all the time, and it was really fun. It was competitive, but very friendly. I would never play it online though, as others have said, people take it way too seriously. There are actually online leagues that you can participate in that have their own ranking system and moderation to deal with leavers and such. I don't know much about them, but they definitely exist; you can probably find it via Google. If you're ever thinking of playing in those kinds of leagues, you'll really need to study each and every hero, learn skill ranges, combos, builds and pretty much everything. It's actually surprisingly deep for just a custom map.

The creator's of DOTA have actually begun creating their own game called 'League of Legends' which plays exactly like DOTA, unsurprisingly. http://www.leagueoflegends.com/ is their site.

It's not too difficult. I set each Meepo to its own control group and have all of them in another. Fights usually look like: Run the main Meepo in with windwalk (Lothar's), net, poof each individual Meepo to the main, and begin a net cycle. Meepo is also a lot harder to gank in general because you keep them separated and poof away whenever you see someone. Also, poof is retardedly imba for farming because of its low cooldown and high damage. You literally walk from neut camp to neut camp poofing.

In high level league play Meepo is seldom played because he's easy to counter, but at lower levels of play, for example, Clan TDA on USEast, it's just too easy to rape as him. And in -apem pubs... it's just dumb.

Mortred is only as good as you let her be. To be honest theres quite a few heroes that will murder end game with no troubles, but put them up against a strong axe or abuser from the start and they'll never get good enough.

Drow is still the bestest most sexually awesome character ever as far as I'm concerned, em or not I just find her super easy to build up because the build I use goes in lots of little parts.

In any case, fuck DotA, EotA was so much better but no one played it because DotA required less thought =(

I know meepo can be awesome if the player know how to handle him (them?), but someone relatively new to Dota is never going to do that good. Some hero require much less mental works (and clicking) than other

Yeah, axe is a strong one that isn't hard to play. It's usually easier to escape him than other hero tho, but he is pretty much invincible with the right build, and he can get kill quite early in the game if your opponent suck (or is unlucky)
