Does HIV cause AIDS?

AIDS is symptomatic of HIV, as running nose is symptomatic of flu. but in this case, the HIV erodes your immune system to the extent that you're susceptible to all other virus or bacteria. When the immune system is weakened past a certain threshold, you have got AIDS. Simply put, eventually you could die of something as common as the flu virus due to complications, such as internal bleeding, because you are completely defenseless.

To answer your question, yes, HIV causes AIDS.

You completely misread what I said. Retrovirals, not Retroviruses. I know the retrovirus HIV causes AIDS, fucking duh. I know what AIDS is, my comment was in response to the notion of retrovirals (aka the drugs you take to slow the onset of AIDS) killing people.

HIV is not asymptomatic AIDS, and it isn't "just having the virus". it is the virus, and because it directly causes AIDS, AIDS is not a syndrome.

Tonko listed the symptoms where, once you meet certain symptomatic criteria, you are diagnosed with the syndrome called AIDS. HIV is a virus and a disease, since it attacks your immune system. Once that attacking degenerates your body to the point where you start showing symptoms, the collective symptoms are a syndrome known as AIDS.

But yes, a few times in that drunken post I said "HIV" when I meant "being HIV positive". And of course, having AIDS means you are still HIV positive, AIDS doesn't replace it, it's the collection of symptoms (a syndrome) caused by it.

HIV doesn't magically disappear when you're diagnosed with AIDS. It stays in your body, continues to cause the symptoms of AIDS, and is what transfers to others and gives them AIDS.

I wasn't trying to say that at all. Also, if you want grammar nazi-ing, you can't "give someone AIDS", you can only give them the HIV virus.

It doesn't matter if it's true or not, it's LOGIC. Logic is a subset of empiricalism. The goal of the exercise is to use the material given to try and prove a logical conclusion empirically.

I'm amazed at how irrational most of you are about such a simple logic exercise just because you don't like the material...seriously...wow.

We didn't miss the point. Re-read the OP. We adressed the factual errors the article he refferenced made, and answered his request for information on HIV & AIDS.
