Goldsmithing from 63+ and general advice

OK. For the past several years, I've levelled Goldsmithing from zero to 63 by the seat of my pants. It's time to go for the big numbers now and I practically know dick about synthing.

I'm hoping that someone can lay down the basics for me or steer me in the right direction to the post that has it already.

At 63, I'm looking at farming and synthing Moblumin Ingots to craft into Moblumin sheets. That synth is 69. Is that too high, too low? What kind of level gap should I aim for?

I do not have multibillions in gil so I've been trying to do this economically. Goldsmithing and economically don't need to be in the same post, it seems. Do any Goldsmithers out there have any advice for how to avoid going tits up broke on skilling up?

Unless you plan on taking another 5 years to hit 100, I'd say theres no way around losing a lot.

The last person I knew who recorded every synth/profit/loss from GS 0-100 ended up with a net loss of ~34M. (Granted this was a few years ago) However, today is not much different considering the state of the FFXI economy. It's still going to cost you 10-15M+ to hit the big leagues.

However, that being said... aim for about 4-5 level gap on synths. Never more than 6, because you can't skillup on a break if it's more than 6 lvls under cap. The only exception to this is a ridiculously cheap synth (i.e Yagudo Fletchings for CC)

You can try to find alternative synths to skill up on, and create your own niche system for leveling. However, generally the established skillup routes are there for a reason. Research is your best friend, and as a crafter you damn well should know your craft and the market.

Pause once you reach the cap on ANY synth that you can make half a nickel on. Now without looking at the recipes I would deduce that you might be able to make some small profits off of ore -> ingots maybe or while making any ingredients for higher level synths.

But in general, if you are trying to not lose much money while skilling a craft, Goldsmithing is NOT the way to go.

64-80 is basically a wasteland in Goldsmithing.

Mob Ingot - Mob Sheet - breaksynth Shrimp Lanterns will take some of the pain away, but it requires you to have not levelled Smithing too far, and to be able to farm two of the ingredients.

I'm currently 61 on my smithing mule, trying to get to 68 for gold apron ;;. I have about 70 synths worth of materials to do on mythril gauntlets, but am trying to get as close to 64 as possible off platinum junk. You could get a level off platinum sheets, but waiting for the AH to stock up on mats kinda suck. I don't think hydro patas are any better, seeing how boneworkers hardly make them any more. It sucks I can't do shrimp lanterns

You have a typo there Sanoske. It should be 5 lvls under cap, not 6 for break skillups.

I think I made platinum rings from like 65-70 and saved all of them. 70-80 is the "tough" stage.. You dont really have to save the rings but i did so i can speed through 92-95. If you have under 40m you should stop.

Woof. 40m. Time to get crackin'. I'll yap at you tonight Miz.

My smithing is at 22 currently. You'll have to define "breaksynthing". I'm assuming that it means to gain skill on a break or crit break. Is that correct?

Breaksynthing involves skilling up on a synth that has a sub hopelessly underleveled but with the main profession you're trying to skill up within 5 levels. That way you can break the synth till the cows come home and still get skill ups on the main profession, while keeping some mats from the synth for a few more tries. When I was doing the shrimp lantern phase however I just synthed a crap ton of lanterns and sold them all, usually at a bulk buy discount rate to linkshells who wanted a few for Shen runs. I think that was one of the only times from 60-99 I actually made money skilling up.

If you really want to ensure you break synth and want to keep it cheap, then be at 15 levels under the subcraft level.

Whoops. It's been so long since I really skilled up on anything that wasn't within a lvl or two of cap, I forgot whether it was 5 or 6. My bad.

If I were redoing my mules, I would never ever ever have done goldsmithing. I've spent many millions skilling, she's not even 100 yet, and I'll never make that amount of money back.

It's true I didn't take up goldsmithing to make money, I "wanted a challenge", but man was I insane.

Alchemy, on the other hand, I was millions ahead by the time I passed my gold mule's level. Also, I've been working on gold for a couple years now, and did alchemy in a couple weeks.

    Run while you still can.

The thing that truly raped goldsmithing was all the rare/ex ring and earring rewards from EVERY FUCKING EXPANSION. When I first decided to level GS flame and snow rings where like 300-500k profit per synth, so I figured I'd get myself some of that action. But by the time I could actually make the bastards I'd be lucky to sell them at break even. Fuck GS, fuck SE and fuck R/x rings and earrings. /nerdrageoff

I am on my mid 80s GS, everyone told me 70-80 is the hardest, and i thought the same think as well, but f***, when i syn bean myself and resell, the breakage cost more than any stage!

I'm almost to 64 myself and I really don't know where to go from here. Making Platinum Ingots has been almost a loss, and everything below it doesn't make a profit at all.

I'm a SMN, so farming isn't incredibly quick or easy for me. If anyone wants to give me some advice here, I would greatly appreciate it.

I'd give up but I feel like there has to be some point at which I can stop and start making some gil, even if it's a small amount. Is it really such a dead end?

I check the entire ffxiah goldsmithing database once a week to see if there are any profitable synths. I found a small niche market for about half a year but someone else crashed it. I can still make money but not as much as I once did. Even during its prime, I was only make 50-60k a day with constant AH sales. Now I could do the same synth and make approximately 10-15k a day.

Well I was actually thinking about doing GS for my craft to 100. I already have woodworking at 100 on a mule but from the sounds of it you need to be horribly rich to level this profession and even then it wont make bank which what I was afraid of :/

How is leatherworking? It seems it might still be somewhat profitable but I never thought I would level it due to the lack of cursed gear synths but it seems with all the new gear that all the cursed gear is a thing of the past and with cerb mantle, dusk set, and various other pieces it seems to be quite profitable, just wanted to know what you guys think about it?
