So just to be sure, this is a derail, isn't it? Nobody's seriously contending that physical attributes are directly useful in the pursuit of success in modern society (statistically, professional athletes do not count) right?

I stated their importance in the military, one of the last places it truly is a major standard. As for the rest of social interactions, that is a bit of a thicker arguement.

Not entirely, one of the questions I asked was:

"Are men and women really equal".

This wasnt just debate-bait. I really wanted everyone's opinion. As for "quality", one would say both are obviously equal. However much of the struggle here was defining exactly what parameters we could use to compare the two sexes. Many males assume males are genetically superior to females simply due to "superior" standards in the eyes of males (toughness, emotional strength, etc). It was also brought up that gender identification (on a ranged scale) may be directly liked to cognitive development(how you approach problems) and a multitude of physical characteristics. Identifying these gender differences (regardless of the fact that most people contain parts of each gender indentity, differing by person), allows us to gain a better understanding of exactly what traits come from each.

Then the argument isn't really are they really equal. They should be equal, according to our reining ideology, and if they aren't equal it is because we've done poorly in trying to approximate it.

I got to post...100 or so before I decided to skip the rest of this and just throw my own 2 cents in.

2. Are men and women equal?

Physically? No, not in any way shape or form. Mentally? Nope, not even close. Emotionally? HA, yea right. When push comes to shove, men and women are very different creatures. Whether that be because of sociological issues, chromosome differences, hormones or whatever, men and women will never be truly "equal". Yes some women may be as physically "strong" (as in lifting heavy objects and muscle mass) as men and some men may be as emotionally responsive as women, by the exceptions do not make the rules. Men and Women are different...and that's not a bad thing. Just because two things are different, and one thing can be better at something then the other, doesn't mean that one thing is better overall as the other.

Does that mean a woman should be discriminated against or paid less for doing the same job as a man? Oh hells no. We don't have to be equals to treat each other *fairly*. And a woman who can do a job as well as a man or a man who does a job as well as a woman should be rewarded the exact same way. Job performance should be the only factor in deciding how to reward people in the work force, but unfortunately no one gets treated fairly in that regard.

Ignoring all the posts, I'm just going to make a comment on something I can't stand.

Why is it that women can bitch, moan, and complain about wanting to be treated equal to men, but still demand that I take the trash out...or that I hold the door open for them?

I have no problem treating everyone equal, hell I do it anyways. But you can't go half way and only take the good parts of being equal and not the bad. If you want to be treated equal, don't fucking bitch at me when you tell me I have to mow the lawn because I'm the man, and I tell you to do it. You fucking do it if you want to be equal.

This I just love, and it goes beyond just women. People who say they want to be treated equally, then go on to ask for more because they weren't are just hypocrites imo. You either get treated specially, with both the good and the bad that comes with it, or you get treated like everyone else, with both the good and the bad that comes with that as well. Can't have your cake and eat it too, because then that's just not equal now is it.

On that note, LOL at all the people who reply to comments about "men being stronger" with "a woman can be just as strong!" and then go on to complain about how on average women make less then men in the workforce. I can guarantee you that most women where I work make a lot more money then I do. Once again, exceptions do not make the rule.

Genetically speaking, women are actually superior because the male "Y" chromosome is actually an underdeveloped "X" chromosome. It's this difference that increases a woman's resistance to genetic diseases and increases their lifespans on average. But genetics doesn't make Women on the whole a more superior gender, because men and women are built for different things and they both need each other to survive.

Y chromosomes are not underdeveloped X chromosomes.. Having less base pairs isnt a sign of underdeveloped, as the males still contain the X chromosomes as well. The Y chromosomes just hold the needed SRY gene for testis development, along with some other fun stuff.
