It's because people abused them playing Halo 2 and cheating. Same goes for any game that you can exploit online I suppose.

You guys do know you can usually append these codes to your XBL account and deduct from your yearly fee right?

Anyone know if the codes can be used on different consoles? I've taken a few from work that were peeled off like someone used it and it still worked, have yet to actually test this. Damn lazy friends.
