I know they're two different tanking styles. My point is PLD/NIN is perfectly functional as a tank with a haste build and March/Ballad, yet many PLDs would rather render a NIN/DRK co-tank useless than make the switch.

Excalibur is only significant because, in terms of general usefulness, the increased DoT due to maxing out your attack speed seems like it would more than offset the additional healing power that a PLD with Ballad has.

Hold on, I'm pretty sure knights of the round has some stupid shit where it doesn't generate emnity with the damage.. But if you're a pld tank on something big you're not gonna rely on damaging the mob >.>

Anyways, March/ballad works best Imo unless you have 2 brds(or a Brd and a COR) Using turban over Baha mask if you don't have the haste cap probably would be better, but you also have to take account to what you're fighting, if you're fighting something that attacks very fast (Thus you'll be either be very busy curing or casting shadows) I could see Baha mask being more useful because there will be many situations where flash recast is back up and you're casting shadows anyways, so whats the point of having a recast that's faster if you have to wait for the opportune time to use it anyways. So Mask > Turban unless you're fighting something that you don't have to worry about it hitting you much.

This is a common misunderstanding about Excal PLDs.

Talk to Stanislav or Robb or any of the other Excal PLDs who put out huge chunks of damage on every fight, shortening the fight time or even being the sole source of melee damage.

imo, with the addition of Atonement the dmg you gain with Excal isn't really as great as it once looked in comparison, and pld going with double march should not effect the cotank, consider repositioning your tanks so that your brd can get proper distance without being on opposite sides of the mob or teaching your brd how to pianissimo

I don't have, nor do I co-tank with an Excal PLD, but I would think that the combination of the added effect on Excal, combined with Atonement, would be pretty strong in terms of damage over the course of a fight.

How the hell does an amazing weapon skill change Excalibur's potential? Its not as if Knights of the Round was the reason people used the thing.

yes, but iirc, the add effect supposedly had no impact on the enmity of the wielder and the question was if an excal pld could hold hate significantly better than a non-excal pld.

That's never the point I meant when bringing up Excalibur. My point was that you can make some concessions in holding hate to fill some other roles, either tossing around cures or doing a lot of damage via Excalibur.

And yeah, this pet peeve of mine predates Pianissimo, which has mostly resolved it. PLD and NIN can get the songs they each prefer now, I just still wonder why so many PLDs prefer to build enmity faster than they need to at the expense of being able to serve another small role.

I never intended to mention anything about Excal PLDs holding hate better than non-Excal.

They can both hold hate the same, but the Excal PLD can do a lot more damage and speed the fight up.

Don't mean to change direction of thread but with the addition of Atonement do you think its worth it to merit Chivalry 5/5? I rarely find myself sitting on a reasonable amount of TP anymore and IF I find myself in an "Oh shit" situation I'll be getting just enough MP for 1 Cure 4.
Anyone wanna discuss whats the best PLD merit scheme atm? 5/5 sent 5/5 ramp and I have really no clue whats "best" for group 2.

Depends if you solo anything on pld. I know as far as campaign goes its always nice to have, as well as soloing ancient goobue/loo/fun stuff like that.

Atonement or not, Chivalry on a 10-minute timer is great, especially if you solo/duo a lot.

Of course it would still increase your dmg, and I'm not saying that Atonement lowers its potential, I'm only saying that it is even less necessary than it already was, the main point I was trying to get across was, Excalibur or not I wouldn't see myself tanking with anything other than double March unless I was extremely low on mp.

Sub rdm, use ice spikes pants, bring refresh drinks, or meds that you think you will need. It is pretty strait forward.

Wouldn't Ice Shield be a better option over Ice spikes pants for non-Aegis plds?
-3 Vit compared to Koenig but same shield size (I think) and the ice spikes effect seems pretty reliable.
That way you should still be able to use Homam pants and Reprisal (spikes overwrite and prevent Reprisal from being put on).
