Once talent tree swaps are full in effect that conversation probably won't happen as long as you're willing to carry around some tanking gear.

play a class you like, seriously can raid with any fucking raid set up.. especially now that everything end game is easy as hell. nothing is as hard or ever will be as hard as vanilla wow or the un-nerfed tbc dungeons (the completely unnerfed ones where they basically first came out)

Yes play anything you want, but you will still only get into a guild/raid before other people or with lesser gear if you are a healer.

Even if you can change specs, and have a 2nd set of gear, your main set/spec if it is healing will be > then your 2nd set.

Lot's of healers in my Sunwell guild got all their healing pieces pretty much, then didn't wanna heal anymore and wanted to spec different, so spots for new healers would always open up before spots for new anything else. We barely ever let new dps or tanks in because we trusted our main ones, and if we couldn't down something with our main ones, then bringing in others was not an option. If you have decent gear and want to get into a higher end guild, you need to be a healer. Even tanks have trouble.

If you don't care about highend stuff, and have friends to play with, or are casual, then play anything you like. There is so many people, so many guilds, and so many instances and things to do in this game that there will always be a spot somewhere, somehow. And if you excel at your class, you might get recruited by a better guild somewhere down the line. Play whats fun, as all classes have a place in endgame, but for true endgame and highend guilds that raid 7days a week that pretty much take up all your time, healing is the best shot you have.

If you're competent, getting into a decent raiding guild as a dps isn't difficult. Getting into pugs is a different story but it depends on the class. Mages for example have a much easier time getting a group than say a dps warrior.

my prot war sees more end game action than my rogue or lock, obvious reason, even if my rogue/lock were over geared for the event.

is shaman or paladin better at healing?
If people are gonna say shit is situational then which one is more desired for endgame raids?
Also which one is better for soloing/pvping

It used to be stack 15 shamans a raid but they ended up removing that particular aspect, really just about any healer will do fine (and have no sweat doing 5mans/10mans easily). I've not leveled a shaman any past 30 (when they get windfury) but I heartell they level super easily as enhancement, paladin got a lot better for soloing/leveling recently but comparatively I'd say they're now around the same?

For PvP Shaman is probably better, just as a generality. (no matter what I say here I'll probably get flamed by someone =D)

In PVE, where beacon of light won't get dispelled, I think paladin is going to be the best healer overall.

In PVP people will realize that once you dispel beacon paladins are damn near exactly the same as we were at 70, i.e. trash.
