What's funny is when you take a step back from religion you see how blatantly hypocritical most of Christianity turns out to be.

Regardless, engaging in a mortal sin is not synonymous with being excommunicated; the former guarantees Hell unless formally confessed, the latter is an expulsion of sorts from the Catholic church.
