uh? TV: Battlestar Galactica, Stargate SG1, Firefly, Star Trek Voyager in the last 10 years. Babylon 5 + DS9 just barely in the last 10 years. Heroes/Lost sort of as well. Moviewise theres Serenity, Gattaca(11 years ago w/e), The Matrix, The Iron Giant, Transformers, Wall-E and an argument could be made for Star Wars Episodes 2 + 3(they are watchable no matter how badly Lucas fucked up). There are other movies tv shows I'm blanking on as well I'm sure. I think a more accurate statement would be that Sci-Fi as a genre is struggling to figure out where it wants to go, towards more character driven, thought provoking stuff that merely uses a futuristic/science environment merely as background, like old Sci-Fi books did all during the 20th century or whether it wants to stay the same stagnating fanboy bullshit its been after TNG arguably.

Don't forget Farscape. That show was great. And there was what... 5-6 seasons? Pretty sure it was in the last ten years.

Chiana's actress was at GenCon a couple of years back and she always had a HUGE line of slobbering men waiting in line.

    and earlier:
Shit I thought the kid thing was cool, shows like he's a suicidal wreck then a alien shows him his destiny.
in the better trailer, there's a police badge on the uniform.

Right now the only two watchable sci-fi programs currently producing new episodes are Battlestar and Doctor Who. And Voyager was an AWFUL show, about the only thing that kept it going were Jeri Ryan's tits, and that was definitely a move in the wrong direction.

Sci-Fi is as broad a genre as 'action' I guess, and trying to say something is true sci-fi (Doctor Who) while something else (like Heroes) isn't is going to devolve into a shouting match with no end. Personally I like my sci-fi to reflect on world society as a whole and the dirty extremes that our current realities can stretch to. This is why Doctor Who is so fucking strong. Fringe is a promising show for this reason as well but I worry that because it's FOX they'll move it to an impossible time slot and it'll die off, because that is what they do with ALL of their original programming.

This new Star Trek is promising because it'll rekindle a pretty rich vein of inspiration for new sci-fi stuff coming out but honestly I'm waiting to see more of the story elements before I let myself get completely swept away by the awesome visuals and promising cast.

As for films, I stand by my one per year at most as good remark. Sci-Fi on film has been trending towards shock horror and I fucking hate it.

John Cho is in it, and they didn't modernize the uniforms.

It will be awesome, and I'm not a Star Trek fan.

That was my point with Voyager; that while watchable cause of Jeri Ryan it is the stagnation style sci fi that appeals to a dying base rather then the better kind like Battlestar Galactica. Considering the amount of ire raised by this movie and its similiarity to the complaints BSG raised because it was so different from the original makes me think the movie will be good.

Star Trek Footage Debuts in New York! (25min)

    Analysis

Without being a diehard "Star Trek" fan, it's hard to determine whether Trekkers will accept what Abrams is doing with this prequel, because that's really what this is, a prequel to the original television show. He certainly has kept most of the characters and traditions of the original "Trek" series and movies intact, using that history to establish the characters, their relationships and the technology. Frankly, I was amazed by how much footage Abrams showed at this presentation, because it really sets up the entire story of what the movie is about, clearly a new beginning for the franchise similar to Batman Begins or Casino Royale, which may be exactly what the "Trek" series needs right now. Besides Yelchin's annoying accent, the cast really seems up to the task of reinventing and redefining the crew of the Starship Enterprise and if the action and FX we saw in this footage is anything to go by, this is going to be the biggest "Star Trek" movie yet. Who knows? Maybe spending all that time making this movie has finally helped Abrams to "get it."

I liked Voyager, mind you I started with Voyager, then DS9, skipped TNG and went straight to TOS, then to TNG.

I think DS9 was the weakest, although the Defiant wins the bad-ass ship award.

Nothing ever beats Shatner in TOS though.

Obligatory TNG > all comment, etc., etc.

But yeah, this trailer looks quite awesome. I mean, John Cho (Harold from Harold and Kumar) is in it!

The TV trailer was the first commercial break during "Fringe" on Fox last night.
To be honest, besides the ship, nothing about it appears "Trek-like" in the least.

In the first 15 seconds of the spot, they show an angry Spock yelling/fighting with Kirk. Seriously, an angry Spock? WTF is that?
It's doubtful that Pegg will be anything more than a caricature of Scotty, just merely running around with the accent yelling "Great Scott!".

Yeah, the FX look incredible, and it actually looks to contain some pretty cool action, just don't know if I'm ready to look at these new faces and think of them as the same Trek characters.

I disagree. I think that DS9 was the best show. It had that darker atmosphere and explored a darker side of the spectrum that TNG didnt touch. The ending of DS9 was lame as hell and I don't like what they did with Sisko, but season 3 - 7 up until the last episode were awesome.

I thought Voyager was lame, although it picked up some when they brought the borg back into the picture.

Ive tried to watch TOS, but I only got up to season 2 and lost interest.

of course to each his own, that just my 2 cents.

I loved all the Voyager episodes that had dealings with the Borg. That was really what made the show for me.

I liked some of the DS9 episodes, but some really dragged on every now and then. Mind you it has been years since I saw a DS9 so that might have somehting to do with it.
Not to mention the station would show them any which way mixing series and storylines like noodles.

I think Voyager and DS9 was what really got me into the Trek thing seeing how they would air back to back.

Not really disappointed with any of the Trek series though.

No wait, Enterprise had a lot of potential but never hit the mark for me.

I saw it linked from ComingSoon.net - Movie Trailers - Upcoming Movies - Movies Coming Soon - Films - Release Dates - TV - DVDs - Videos - Clips yesterday. I liked the one they showed in theaters better. The thing at the end was nice, but Nero saying "The wait is over" in the middle of the trailer seemed thrown in there to me.

I agree about DS9, people always think I'm nuts when I say that though. The Dominion war really forced the characters to explore the whys of their society in a way no other series touched on.
